I can confirm that the Karl Zemlin lens hood for the EF 800mm f/5.6 fits perfectly on the new RF 800mm f/5.6. It even includes a SWAG sticker and my wife really liked the enclosed Smarties treat!

I think I may go initially with the extra long 208mm hood. I want ideal conditions for shooting this lens. I may circle back and get the combo hood for travel, vehicle use and sports - thanks Dave_E!

Thanks all again for your help!

On another note is there a hard case solution anyone has found for car travel specially. I'm hoping my old Kinesis L621b Long Lens case will fit this puppy for regular use. But it would be nice to have something solid that doesn't roll around in the SUV.

If the case doesn't need to be carry-on for flying, I'd look at something a bit bigger than the Pelican 1510, Pelican 1535 Air, Nanuk 935, SKB 2011-7, etc. All of those will accommodate the length of the 800/5.6, but might be tight fits for depth with the hood reversed and if you're planning to store with the Canon front cover. I know with the 1510 I used to travel with either a 400/2.8 or 600/4, but it required a bit of force to close the lid with hood reversed on lens, but front cover omitted.

A couple suggestions could be the Pelican 1595 Air (B&H link) or Pelican 1615 Air (B&H link), both with Trekpak dividers. And you may need to buy a couple more dividers for it (B&H link). A reason I'd recommend a Trekpak option (only available for Pelican) is that it's a very customizable divider system that allows for a more exact fit over the usual padded dividers and is a vastly superior option over the old pick & pluck foam. Otherwise lately I've been a Nanuk convert, but the challenge with them could be finding a divider configuration that will accommodate a 17" long lens. SKB is another option and they've partnered with Think Tank for their padded dividers, which probably are the best of the bunch. With them you'd want at least an 8" deep case like the 2011-8, 1914-8 or deeper, like the 2015-10. Some of these are roller cases, which are more convenient to move around, but some are not.
