Hi!

I know both are old lenses but nowadays I really don't like new lenses with such a distortion and all sharpness and flat rendering... does anybody has both this lenses to compare? I want to buy one but don't know...

thank you!
Carles

I have the Zeiss 25/2 and really like it. When I bought the 25/2 I compared it to the Canon 24. The biggest better thing that I remember about the Canon 24 was that it was lighter. The biggest thing I know about the 25/2 is that it's sharper, it has an infinity stop which really is helpful for aurora shooting in the dark. I have used the 25/2 less since getting R5 because I have not done much aurora shooting lately and I am fussier about bent trees because of off level. But I have checked it adapted on my r5 with adapter and it works well. So does my 15/2.8 and 35/1.4 - but the infinity stop is just a smidge different (then 5dsr unadapted) and they work better on my drop in adapter (35/1.4 does not reach infinity on my straight adapter) which I could fix but I like the drop in adapter better anyway, and it cost money to adjust.

[https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1858551/0#16550067 is discussion of distagons and adapter]

The Zeiss 25/2 reviews you will read will say that the 25/2 is better for close in (field curvature is more favourable for close in) but I really like it at infinity for aurora.

I could take a picture and compare it to my ts24 (which is quite sharp) but I am not sure that I know what you shoot. I like the rendering / sharpness better on the Zeiss but I really like the shift on the ts24.

thank you Scott,

I already have the zeiss 25/2 for many years, I really like it for close-mid focus distance, not so much for landscape. I have an oportunity for the Canon 24mm but version II, maybe can be a good lens for city and street photography due the autofocus, don't know.... but you are right, the zeiss has something!

I like this review site, but they are not big on canon reviews, but they have the 24 and 25, so a good comparison:

https://www.lenstip.com/245.1-Lens_review-Canon_EF_24_mm_f_1.4L_II_USM.html
be careful you are looking at the ff not the apsc

https://www.lenstip.com/331.4-Lens_review-Carl_Zeiss_Distagon_T*_25_mm_f_2.0_ZE_ZF.2_Image_resolution.html
coma is better in my quick read

I would say, based on the reviews: They are close. And the 24II is very nice lens. But for rendering the mtf at 10 is more important in character, which is where Zeiss usually shines. And the below link shows it better but not startlingly so.

https://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/MTF.aspx?Lens=780&FLI=0&LensComp=480&FLIComp=0
comparing Zeiss 25/2 to canon 24II, Zeiss has better micro contrast (MTM at 10) [keeping mind that canon is at f1.4 and Zeiss at f2 - so they are closer than it looks]

Below: Zeiss is sharper at f2 at edges [and slightly better at f5.6) and the are pretty even 2 stops down in middle. But Zeiss sucks at f1.4

So absent getting better data than this - I would say that unless you need f1.4 and autofocus, you don't need the 24/II. Its rendering will not be better than the Zeiss 25/2 and its less sharp and the coma is lessor. [ but if you are a lens collector like me - go for it It may be a better lens at infinity but I like my 25/2 at infinity for aurora for the hard stop and I really like my edges at f2]
