I currently have a M1 iMac with an extra monitor and a MacBook Pro. I've gone with two computers(one desktop, one laptop) for years but always consider just going with a higher end laptop. Has anyone downsized to just a laptop and regretted it? I'd probably get a Mac Studio if I went the desktop route but would wait for the M3 version. The laptops have the M3 chip now. The downside of a laptop would be that I'd probably want to purchase another monitor and a hub. I don't use my laptop a ton but do have jobs that it's required so I have to have one.

I went from a Mac Studio to a MBP and simply use a dock to connect it to my monitor, keyboard and trackpad along with hard drives, speakers, video camera, etc. Don't miss the desktop and my wife can also connect her laptop via the USB-C cable.

This is the dock we use: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08KRTKX9V/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

I tried to main a MBP and the docking was such a pain in the butt that I just gave in and got an M2 Studio and was VERY happy I did. It's a great computer that takes no space, makes no noise, and keeps my external drives/readers all neatly grouped up without having to dongle them constantly.

I don’t need a powerful laptop, but I do need a powerful main computer and I want two 27 inch monitors attached to that main computer. In order to get the power I want, the laptop would be much more expensive and I wouldn’t want to take it anywhere for fear of something going wrong with my main computer and the cost tied up in it.

I've been using my MBP M1 Max in clamshell mode with the Apple Studio Display now for about two years. Does everything like a desktop but without having to deal with a second computer. Prior to that it was an intel MBP and my iMac.

Laptop’s are the only way I spend time on my computer. Even my 2019 MBP is plenty powerful to process photos and handle day to day tasks with ease. I can always connect to an external monitor if needed.

Since we're talking Mac products here, I don't personally have a desire to do anything but a MBP with Apple silicon. I still work with a M1 Pro 16" and it's plenty powerful, I like the option of having it connected to the Studio Display in my office or taking it into the garage if I have a studio setup going. Of course, this is 100% hobby for me but I suspect I would have the same setup if I were a professional.

Good conversation, though. Different strokes for different folks for sure.

FWIW I’ve been using a high spec MBP in clamshell mode with a good monitor (currently an apple studio) for well over a decade. That’s for design and still photography work mostly, occasionally video.

Never considered going back to a desktop machine. The flexibility and ease especially with an apple monitor & macbook is too much.

I don’t think I’d like being constrained to a laptop only though, even with the 16” screen on my current M3Max. It’s a pleasure to use the big studio monitor whenever I’m at my desk.

My macOS time is shared between a MBP (Early 2015 13") and a MP (Late 2013) "trashcan" with 27" monitor. I certainly prefer the MP due to its power and virtually silent operation under every load. It also sports a shitload of ports which I enjoy. The MBP is used as I move between rooms, my office, or cafe. I aim to keep this arrangement for as long as possible. And, yes, I also own several PCs running W10 and Linux.

Got a strangely high trade in value direct from Apple on my M1 Mini and upgraded to an M2 Max 14" MBP. Zero regrets.

32" high res monitor and a useful Thunderbolt dock for my external drives etc.

Love the new setup. I like that it has enough juice to power everything. Not really understanding the issue with docking - just plug/unplug the Thunderbolt cable and you're ready to rock.

Why don't you get both?
