you are joking right? i never rob myself of real usable technological advances. that doesn't come out all that often. most of what has shown up as of late is far from being anything of consequence don't even rate eye candy quality.

that's why i can use mine for a long time. they make quality tools. quality equals long term usability which equals value.

i said buy once and use for a long time (not forever).

This is a nice overview from someone who has tried many.

I have ha Gitzo in the past, and just got an FLM.

video is 4 years old stale info.

CTC has a website i have yet to see the tripods. never in sellable stock. i actually have their small utility ballhead the Highline Mini. prototyped in the US what little they actually made was made so far west it was east.

his info about FLM is a little light in facts like what the difference is between MkI and MkII origin of manufacture. the company themselves put out a notice of change of sourcing.

rubber coming off the RRS? well not the 2 i have and use. they are to this day on tight and travel well. eventually it will loosen but are easily replaced.

overall he doesn't spend enough time giving reasonable historic or usage data

probably from having too many tripods

pretty week

I tuned him out when he recommended CTC. First, though, I checked CTC's website—apparently still nothing available to take delivery on, although they're taking deposits for one of the tripods mentioned in the video.

On the good side, we learned that he abhors flip-lock leg locks and center columns...

i think that page is frozen in time.

i do like center columns when they are designed and built correctly. they are more than adequate for many things photographic. center columns got a bad name due to poor design and manufacturing a low price.

Tough crowd.
Didn’t realize tripods have advanced so much in the last 4 years.

advanced? they really haven't. if you found one you find good to work (remembering it is a tool with generally 2 parts legset and head) with and fits your REAL needs years will go by unless you are addicted to buy buy buy.

I agree. Last week I bought my first new tripod in 30 years. That one, a 1 series Gitzo, is still being used. The new one replaces the Gitzo I bought 40 years ago that has gotten too big and heavy as I get older. Crazy enough, I could still get replacement parts to fix if I wanted to.I fully expect the new FLM to outlive me.

My old Gitzo tripods had higher build quality than the new ones. I bought a Gitzo series 3 tripod and the piece that clamps to lock the leg in position had broken off. Instead of machined metal Gitzo went cheap and used a pot metal casting. If that had broken off during a trip it would have meant having no tripod to use.

I owned the RRS TVC-34 and it was well made but too long for air travel. I replaced it with the much better Feisol tripod that would collapse to less than 20 inches to fit inside the overhead compartment of a plane and it has a quick level base conversion for landscape and video shooting as well as a center column kit to add 7 inches of very stable support for a very heavy lens and camera. The build quality of the Feisol is on par with that of RRS and quite a bit better than the current Gitzo tripods.

Many people have posted about problems getting their Gitzo tripods serviced under warranty or getting replacement parts in the USA. Important to give this some careful consideration.
