I'm about to move to a city from the village we stayed in temporarily and I'm thinking of selling the Fuji GFX 50r that I kind of picked up on a whim. I just know that I won't carry that camera around on my city shooting and I know that I prefer my Canon R5 for model and portrait photography (largely because of the excellent eye AF).

This made me realize that I really like the 5x4 ratio of the Fuji GFX series (and my MFT cameras) over the more popular 3x2 ratio. My second choice would be 1x1.

That still isn't enough of a reason to keep the Fuji, but it did make me wonder if I'm alone in this preference.

Am I?

I had some experience with 4x5 cameras back in the day and always liked the format. Now all my cameras are 3:2 but I will crop to 4X5 on occasion. I typically let the image tell me what the crop should be. I would say 99% are 3:2, 4x5, or 1:1.

I don’t restrict my images to any given ratio. Definitely let the subject matter dictate the crop. Much of my shooting requires cropping in post as getting exact composition in the field is quite difficult.

3:2 is great for landscapes but I find that almost all of my nature work (most of what I do) is cropped to 5:4 I seldom do people but 5:4 works better for that too IMO.

i crop as needed. Sometimes I crop because I want the image to fit a particular frame size (although I make my own frames). Usually I crop to tune composition as needed. I usually find 3:2 or square works; often an unconstrained crop is best; sometimes I use 4:5. I generally use crop as a composition tool.

I think my favourite aspect ratio is 6x7, but I'll shoot anything; either intentionally, or just because it's what I have at hand.

I often crop to 4x5 or 3x4. I think 4x5 is my favorite—looks great for portraits and nature. Something about it just seems very right to eyes (maybe association with MF film)

I often find that 3:2 is too narrow for vertical images so I crop them. Sometimes to 5:4 or 7:5 or whatever fits "best".

In 2007 Nikon introduced the D3 camera that had 5:4 as a format option. It was great for having image files that could be used for a 8x10 print without any cropping in post. Sadly the Nikon people did not provide this crop format with the Z mirrorless cameras.

3x2 is great for landscapes, sometimes even wider.

4x3 and 4x5 are great for verticals where 3x2 is just way too skinny.

Sometimes 1x1 is great for street and architecture where there is excellent square symmetry.

Different ratios have their place.

Most often I take photos with 35 mm or FF, ratio 3:2. I always dislike that most commercial photo frames with matting use the 5x4 ratio which requires cropping. 18x12" frames are great since they exactly accommodate the 3:2 ratio.

My second favorite is actually 1:1 ratio. Square prints look amazing when framed in a square frame, too. They easily stand out from all other rectangular frames.

My fav for many things is 4:3 ... but, subject composition may be best served by others, too.

I prefer 4:3 myself, but have got used to 2:3. But whenever I compare 2:3 to 4:3, I think how ridiculously long and thin it is (or tall and thin). I am not afraid to crop though.
