I did a shoot for the state SAR dog exercises last fall in Prescott, AZ. I carried 2 1dx bodies, one on the EF 100-400 and the second on 24-105. While neither qualify in the super-long department, I was following dogs and handlers through some fairly rugged terrain in the mountains, often off path, for 3, 8-10 hour days, about 1/2 the time in heavy downpours. Total distance hiked was about 14 miles. The 100-400 was on a cross body sling similar to those mentioned above, and the 24-105 was in my belt-rigged think tank holster. The belt rig also held water, department radio, and all the other "stuff" I had with me.
My setup allowed me to keep up with the dogs (sometimes a task even for the handlers) access anything I needed quickly while providing a place to dump stuff out of my hands. The belt rig (with suspenders) was very comfortable and stable and the cross shoulder rig worked well as long as the shoulder pad stayed in place. Think Tank makes holsters for up to 800mm (if memory serves) though I have never used one that large.
