How do you manage and store your gear?

How do you stay organized?

I am looking for ideas on how people store and manage the gear they have.

I know that some folks tend to be very selective in the gear they keep around and then others like me are a bit packratty.

Do people use hard cases to store and then cycle out lenses for assignments/projects into a smaller sling or messenger bag?

I know there's not going to be a right answer and I expect that different types of photographers are going to have different strategies for managing gear.

What's worked?

What hasn't?

What idea seemed good but was 100% a disaster?

I never store my gear in a case. I have a closet dedicated to my gear and just store the cameras and lenses on the shelves. Easy enough to grab the gear you need and put them into a pack for a shoot. Keeping gear in cases can cause problems if the gear or case are damp.

Ruggard dry case. Makes it easy to defog em in humidity and makes it easy to sort them in a mostly dustless environment in a house full of pets.

I'll go against the grain. Over the years I've accumulated a range of hard case rollers from Pelican, Nanuk, etc. I mostly use the older ones for storage. My main kit is in a Nanuk 950 and I often take it on location for jobs. Once at the destination, I'll transfer what I need to other carry solutions.

If I lived in a more humid year-round environment, or didn't have central air, I'd definitely look into dry cases/cabinets. Probably a good idea for the PNW.

Most gear is nowadays in drawers or in a closet. My various batteries, filters and straps are on a board near my office door, so I can quickly grab those depending on which kit I’m taking.

I bury em in coffee cans in the back yard

Actually I store them in the gun safe. I keep a humidity sensor in that room.

For the bodies and lenses, I have one of those dry cabinets that goes on sale frequently at B&H. I mainly wanted it for the shelves and lock. I wish I could say I always put things back in it but the stuff in there is the stuff that's rarely used. The frequently used stuff is usually in a sling bag ready to go. I have a rack for all the batteries and chargers.

I put everything in a burgler proof safe ( not fireproof) with a heating rod (damp chaser) on the bottom to control humidity. Since my safe only weighs 300 pounds it is bolted to the floor via the holes made for that inside the safe on the bottom.

I have Pelican TrekPak dividers in an Ikea Alex drawer unit that holds everything, although now that I've dramatically downsized most of my gear it is quite empty..

I keep two shoulder bags complete with my typical kit, one m43 and one FF. They are ready to go at any time. I also have a Lowepro roller bag that keeps extra stuff and other lenses that I use when I want change either of the bag contents. I don’t like to have spend time packing a bag before I head out, since most of the time my kits stay the same.

I have some older roll on cases. I use one for Canon gear; one for Sony gear; and the light one for Olympus gear.

For storage this is what works for me:

Lenses: Ornament Adjustable Storage Containers Link

I place a little liner along the inside of these for padding like link

You can sometimes find clearance deals for these around the holidays for this stuff.

For accessories (lens caps, batteries, tripod mounts, etc) get a bunch of mini drawers like Link

Also you can find a lot of storage/organizer type solutions for this at your local big box hobby stores.

When I had a lot of gear I purchased an inexpensive cabinet which was about 6 ft high and had 2 large front swing out doors.

For local transportation I use this for the bigger lenses. You can leave hood and extender on. Zips from the top so if you forget and pick up gear won't fall out. Not good for hiking but great just to get around when driving. I like it so much I take it to Europe for 2 months. I pack in a big suitcase and fill in with cloths, etc. The name on mine is black, not white so not easy to notice.

Lenses I'm not using? I store them in their cases or leather pouch whatever they came in and have them on a shelf in my closet. But the camera and Sony 100-400 stays mostly in my camera bag since that's the lens I use 99% of the time.

Here in AZ, even in the mountains at mile high altitude, humidity not a big deal.

I use a smaller version of one of these. I use the included power strip to charge batteries after shoot and store everything in the drawers.

you need to cut and paste the link into a browser because I can't get the link to work......I must be getting old.

I have a 6 X 10' gear closet off my shooting room (19 X 26') that I store much of my gear, but since my studio is upstairs in my house, security isn't a significant concern, so what ever that I'm using one day tends to get left in place to continue using the next day. When I change projects I usually put a bunch of it away and do some "picking up". I may even vacuum before beginning to set up for the next shoot. I do have a habit of covering my cameras whenever they in place overnight though. Another 12 X 25' closet off the hair/make-up/break area holds much of the props that I use, until the next time needed. The whole studio is in a former 2nd Master Bedroom Suite upstairs in my home.
