How to support a big heavy lens on a tripod?

I have many large heavy lenses without tripod sockets. And so I bought the Manfrotto 293 Lens Support (see stock photo). But I am not happy with it. It is flimsy to use and doesn't seem rock steady.

Any suggestions? How do you cope? Thanks.

What lenses do you have that don't have tripod collars? Most telephotos in the last thirty years have come with them, but in any event, measure the diameter of the lens barrel and go on eBay and you can find a million different tripod collars in your size. When you find the right one and attach it, then you can go to Kirk Photo or RRS and get an Arca-Swiss compatible mounting foot to go along with the Arca-Swiss compatible clamp you're going to buy for whatever tripod head you're using.

When I'm shooting with a 350mm, 500mm or 700mm lens, I have it on the heaviest Gitzo Gigantic tripod, the one that goes up to over ten feet on top of an Arca-Swiss Cube geared head and then, wherever possible, a second tripod with a padded yoke I made to hold the front of the lens. Two tripods is what it takes with long lenses if you want or need to use longer shutter speeds, but not so good for situations where you need to move around a lot or pan or track a subject.

Thanks for the useful information.

My long lenses have tripod collars. It's the short, fat ones that I want support for. I will give you examples:

Zeiss Otis & Millvus (all of them are heavy!).
Fujinon GF 45-100mm (my favorite GF lens - 1005g) and very front heavy.
Nikon Z 50mm F1.2 (1090g) & 135mm F1.8 "Plena" (995g) and even the 24-70mm F2.8 is 805g and front heavy.

My tripod is the Gitzo Systematic (non "Giant") GT5543LS and the head is a rock solid Arca-Swiss Monoball P1.

I am not keen on tripod collars from the third parties. Instead I am looking for a support system, like they use for cinematography. They have huge lenses without tripod collars, yet they manage to support them with braces and rails and what not! But it seems too complicated to buy the parts and assemble one such rig yourself.

I thought this Manfrotto would do the job, which sadly it does not.

Thanks again!

You can try these lens supports, modular and very handy.

These are what I am using:
1) RRS CRD vertical rail
2) RRS CB-YS lens support
3) RRS FAS clamp

You could also assemble something similar from cheaper parts, but you might run into centering issues. It is better to use parts from a single manufacturer, but still the cheaper options usually don’t have precise alignment.

Cheaper options:
1) Sunwayfoto vertical rail with on end clamp:

2) Sunwayfoto Bidirectional clamp:

Those big beefy cinema lenses you refer to also have big beefy lens mounts as well as rods below them holding the lens up.

I have ordered a SmallRig kit. Or rather, four parts which hope will turn them into a rig which I hope will do what I want.

Once I receive it and try it out, I will post feedback.

I use the same approach as @Cinstance.
