New B+W Filter Packaging

p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · New B+W Filter Packaging

I'll preface this by saying that I have accumulated a good number of filters over the last ~25 years of using several different camera systems. At some point pretty early on i decided I'd stick to B+W filters. There were a few reasons for that and the little plastic clam shell cases they come in was one of those reasons. I became accustomed to them with my Hasselblad filters and liked how i could put them in by bag without having to worry about damaging the filters.

Regardless, i recently picked up some yellow filters for a set of lenses i've got and when i was putting them on my lenses this morning i was surprised to see a new filter holder. The brass ring now has a texture on it - which isn't bad at all but was a surprise. And the plastic filter holder was replaced with a leather case (it smells like leather anyway) that has a filter identifier card in it. It's kind of nice but maybe doesn't protect the filter as much if you're throwing them in a bag.

These are real (not fake) right?

UPDATE: worth noting that the dimensions of the filter ring appear identical which is what i was initially worried about. I have a lens hood on one lens with a precise fit and it it seems to fit identically with this filter as it did with the B+W clear filter i replaced with it.

Bought a B+W MRC Nano Master CPL from B&H like 8 months ago and it came with that kind of soft case too, with the cheesy label holder and all.

It's just something B+W started doing after the pandemic to cut costs probably.

AFAIK the leather is real. I just bought a 67mm Master 010 UV-Haze MRC nano from BH and I was similarly surprised by the packaging change. I don't dislike the leather case, but it looks out of place with the rest of my plastic filter cases. It's hard to imagine that the leather is less expensive than the plastic case, as plastic is pretty cheap.

I've got so many of those plastic cases my plastic cases have plastic cases

I'm kind of curious how these leather ones hold up (eg: are they going to leave a bunch of debris on the filter when not used for a while)

When I use filters (infrequently) I use one of the those velcro folding ones that hold about 4-6. So much easier than fiddling with all those separate, bulky cases.

That case looks good. I use those black fabric tiffen wallets for large ~>=52mm. I don't love them but they're relatively easy to pack, and you can squeeze them into small spaces without damaging the filters. But i'm always looking for something different.

Here's my method for small filters (tops out at 46mm) but works great for those

Yep, the fewer cases rolling around the pack the better.
