I would have preferred a 24-45mm lens. 28 is just not wide enough. Well, maybe some day!

Fence, river, raw sewage spill, police tape, thorn bush, dog that's as far as it can get on it's chain, traffic, cliff edge and many others spoil the zoom with feet theory.

Most still shooters can make-do with the 35 1.4 GM if they already have one. It's not too hard to zoom with feet.

I don't know if Marc does any sharpening in shots he does for Sony Alpha Blog, but this is pretty darn impressive when you look at it at 100%

Yes, it's super sharp. Though I have to say nowadays I feel like I'm not chasing the ultimate sharpness anymore (as long as my lenses are "sharp enough" at least).
The only gripe I have about this Sigma is that I already have that (limited) range very well covered by fast primes...

Been thinking about this lens a little. I'd find it hard to justify since I sometimes leave the 35 GM at home due to weight, but perhaps I could replace my GM with this lens and grab a 24-50 G for actually leaving the house .

Before I grabbed the GM, I was considering the 40 & 35 (1.2) ART, which are even bigger than this new lens somehow. Still probably won't get it, but if the order of these two lenses coming out had reversed I probably would have gotten the 28-45 and treated it like an obnoxiously large prime.

I think my biggest hangup aside from the weight would be copy variation. I have a relatively excellent copy of the 35 GM, and that's difficult enough. What kinda luck would you need to grab an excellent copy of the 28-45?

It's actually a bit less complex design than 24-70 and it seems to me it's that 24 wide end that makes those lenses so hard to get right. So... maybe it won't be that bad .

Hmmm, this gallery by Dustin Abbott looks pretty damn tasty.

Still can't ever see myself picking this lens up based on size/weight. But I think this just reinforces my desire for a 28-40mm f2 GM even more

Sigma's definitely on to something with this lens. But like with the 40/35 (1.2) ART, I think I'll be happier waiting for the Sony version that cuts back a little on the insanity and comes in a much more portable package.

Rumor has been a 24-70/2 GM is coming. I suspect it will be larger and heavier than the sigma, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I'm going to pick this up and give it a go.

Aware of the rumor, and to clarify: I don't think my wishlist lens is coming anytime soon. Can't find the thread as its archived now, but predicted lenses quite like the 20-70 and 24-50 G in ~mid 2022/early 23. Only thing missing from that prediction was the 28-40 f2. Frequently need to photograph one handed these days as I'm carting my 1 year old around and I don't know how I'd ever manage it with the 28-45 ART.

Add that up with the size making it prone to even more bumps & poor treatment than I already give my GM and yeah . Not ideal.

Maybe in ~5 years if Sony doesn't come up with a variant of this I'll grab the ART. Basically the greatest standard PRIME ever made at this point

I'd be very surprised if an f/2 GM came in anywhere close to 950g. And it wouldn't surprise me at all if the price brushed up against $4k.

I think the key is to kit the Sigma with smaller, lighter lenses. The 16-25G and the 70-200GII, perhaps?

Sounds like a nice plan. For now Iíll pair it with my 14-24 which I believe is a stellar copy. Iím more of a prime shooter, but I do a lot of my shooting in this range.

Fun fact; this isn't the first zoom with this range in interchangeable lenses. That would be Nikon's 28-45/4.5, which they billed as the first WA zoom. I came across one when I was cheap lens shopping today and had to look it up.

Canon RF 28-70 f2 is 1430g.
So adding 4mm to the wide end and reducing to 1200g would be an quite an achievement.
Agree, 950g, not realistic.

I agree with pairing it with lighter lenses. I am sure Sigma thinks about pairing it with Sigma lenses and they already have their 16-28 f/2.8 C as a nice light lens with which to pair it. If they made a nice small 45-100 f/2.8 that would be a wonderful trio. Very different from the traditional trio, but one I think that could be really useful for a lot of people.

Or they could kill two birds with one stone and upsize the 50-135/2.8 DC DN they patented to give us a DG DN instead.
