So I've been using 70-200 2.8 zooms forever since the DSLR days. I owned a Nikon 70-200 f/4 paired with a D750 and hated it when I got into low light ceremonies or receptions.

BUT it's 2024! Canon & Sony have great mirrorless bodies and 70-200 f/4 zooms. Looking for thoughts from those of you who own or have owned these current cameras and f/4 zooms...

Basically I'm looking to buy a new 70-200. I'd prefer the f/4 for size & weight but will get the 2.8 for the few times it pays off in AF performance if I have to... Yes, I could just get a used f/4 and try it out for a few months & trade up to the 2.8 if it's not working. I'd still like your real life opinions though...

Check out the new Sony 70-200 2.8... it's smaller, lighter, and fantastic image quality.

I went the other way. Canon's RF 70-200's went on a big diet and now extend out at 200mm so they're light and tiny in your bag (retracted to 70mm).

We have both the 2.8 and 4, both do exactly as you'd expect. The ƒ4, sitting at 70mm (lens hood reversed) is the same size as my 35L prime!!! I shoot with Big White a lot these days - not as much as the 85 1.2 or 135L but it's such a bread-and-butter lens.

FWIW, I think the image standout is the Nikkor Z 2.8 - unreal sharpess and contrast for zoom. It's not that the Canon is bad, but as for IQ they haven't moved (to my eyes) beyond the legacy models.

I can't speak to the new G-Master as both of our Sony shooters have the Tamron 70-180, which is another great and tiny lens.

I would imagine DOF might play into the decision to go with f/2.8 vs f/4. Canon's like the R6 are so good with higher iso that f/4 is completely useable in low light settings where 1 stop of light doesn't make much difference. The Canon 70-200 f/4 @ 200mm @ f/4 has nice rendering for weddings and portraits.
