I'm on the road today so I'll have to do some testing tonight to see what speed improvements this yields. Hopes had been high in the past but I'm not so sure given how fast the DeNoise works with just the GPU. Then again, the M4 generation has some boosts in neural engine performance so this may be something with even more benefits down the road.

• Faster Al Denoise performance for macOS Apple silicon devices - Apple Neural Engine is enabled for Al Denoise on Apple silicon with macOS 14.0 or later.

I noticed that as well. I am interested in hearing of other people’s results. I don’t have an Apple device but plan to switch at some point.

I will also be interested in seeing how the MacBook M4 does later this fall when released, as the M4 seems to be a major update in this area.

This update required a catalogue update FYI. No real speed boost here on an M2 Studio for denoise, 15 seconds as usual for a 45mp file, 30 seconds for a 100mp file.

Finally !
on the MacBook M1 Pro - A7RV - ~ 1min (LR < 13.3) -> ~20 sec (LR 13.3 )
This is a huge improvement.

LR badly needs a lasso tool for removing objects, the brush is just an antiquated, bad tool for the job. So annoying that I have to keep round tripping into photoshop just for this.

Is it the M2 Ultra or Max ?
wonder if they can use the 16 x 2 neural engines of the Ultra, or only up to 16x.

If anyone wants to run this test file and post or send me the result + system config (GPU and Neural cores especially) I'll add a section on the table in the Denoise thread for this version of LRC and the MacOS. I'm updating the OS now and will add results for an M1 MBP with 64GB and the lower end GPU.

Initial results suggest there is little difference now between various device and that would make sense since deNoise is no longer dependent on the GPU and the Neural Engine didn't change much between M1 and M3. The only possible exception could be the Ultra with 2x 16 core Neural Engine and of course future M4 devices that have a much improved Neural Engine.

This is great news as I will likely wait for the M4 Macbook Pro as that will provide me with the best bang for the buck with deNoise performance. The additional GPU cores is less critical now.

I got a time of 30 seconds just tested using the A7R4 test file. It was 37 seconds with the GPU cores when 1st tested with LR 12.4. M1 Max (64GB) MBP 24 GPU cores / 16 Neural cores.

I'll add a new section to the table once we get a few more results in.

Awesome news. There was also a Mac OS update yesterday 14.5. I wonder if that was part of it. It was an OS bug that also affected DXO.

The adobe release notes mentioned that only 14.0 was required for the this.

Enabled Apple Neural Engine for AI Denoise on Mac, with Apple Silicon having macOS 14.0 or later.

Got 30 seconds as 'pre' on an M3 Max (48GB) MPB with 16 CPU cores (12 power/4 efficiency). Not sure where to find the rest in System Info/Hardware.

Will update LRc later

About 3 seconds difference on my 2019 iMac Intel, 64 GB RAM, 8GB VRAM. 33 to 30 seconds.

On my 2020 MacBook Air M1, 16GB RAM. It dropped from 115 seconds to 25 seconds.

Just tried that file on my Mac Mini M2 Pro 16gb RAM, running Sonoma 14.5

26 seconds to Denoise at a setting of 25

Thanks.

With the M3 Max/48GB combo the only option is a 16 core CPU, 40 core GPU and 16 core Neural Engine

Just tried this on a 16 inch M3 Macbook Pro with the M3 Pro chip (36 Gb memory) using the "standard" sample A7riv photo.
With LR 13.2: 55 seconds
With LR 13.3: 35 seconds.

So a definite improvement.

Also no excessive memory usage. Ever since LR 13.2 the memory usage of Lightroom has declined tremendously on Apple Silicon. Looks like Adobe is doing some serious optimization work, in addition to adding features.

Also, I ended the test when I saw the new image appear. Waiting for the progress bar to go away might have added a couple of seconds. I had the denoise set to 50. I'm running MacOS 14.4.1

I'd guess that a M3 Pro may show more of a relative drop in processing time using the neural engine than an M3 Max. The Max has more gpus, but I think the neural engine cores are the same as the m3 Pro

Can you add a link to this thread ?

And when do you stop counting, when the progress bar is gone or when you see the new image ?
And what setting for the denoise (not sure it makes a difference )

I'm not yet noticing any significant "faster" or more efficient LRC DeNoise processing on my Apple M1 Studio Ultra Computer w/ 64GB RAM. But I didn't time before and after the update, so I can't be more specific.

OTOH, I do see a significant improvement in the new non-destructive Generative AI technology/ Generative Remove feature. WOW! I'm using the Early Access features and again WOW removing objects on some really busy backgrounds. This to me is exciting. Not perfect, but very impressive. This is going to keep me as a LRC subscriber...for now 😎

Important note from my personal unscientific experience, apply Generative Remove first when/where needed, before any other edits for optimal results.
