many things are possible, yet not particularly advisable, in this world. who would spend this much money on high dollar cards and introduce an unnecessary level of jank to their equipment?! stay tuned to find out
With adapters if they are passive its usually fine... those micro sd to sd adapters are reliable.
Adapters which need to actively read the data stream and modify it tend to be problematic

Well I got my OWC card OWC 480GB Atlas Pro CFexpress 4.0 Type A Memory Card with the A/B adapter and the OWC Atlas CFexpress 4.0 Type B Card Reader. Both built very nice and the A/B adapter is not flimsy material actually made partly of metal. So far very nice . They give you a high end cable too
Some really good news is that all my cards can be seen and used in the reader. I have a Lexar Silver 320 and 160 and I can see and read them . I no longer need my Angelbird reader which I will sell.
Now with Blackmagic im on my M1 laptop right now as my Studio is at my wife's office as im doing a program book for her . But the speed is really nice
420 card read and write 1435/1249
My Lexar 3 card 320 gb is 756/752
So looks to be about twice as fast..
Im going to sell my Lexar 320 and get another OWC I think
Im mostly after read and writes but I know this should extend the buffer and be faster camera wise as well. Plus im ready for next steps in camera development.
Now some say this may not be worth it but for me and the big jobs I do any speed gain is worth it and at 319 for it is not bad at all...Show more →
CF-A cards may see the biggest jump as they become PCIE 4.0 and 5.0
the NAND is the same as CF-B cards anyway, its the interface holding the current cards back.

My bet is you can shoot it with the adapter in a Type B camera
This is the claim from Exascend ( for some Type B cameras) as well...As I posted earlier in the thread to little or no, fan fare or apparent interest ha ha
To me just another option at hand that may be beneficial for certain circumstances, particularly now that I learned the in-camera write speeds in some cameras from CFexpress B, 2.0 is not much faster than CFexpress A 2.0 !

Im very happy with this. For the 319 it's a much better deal than the Type 3 cards which still are running high.
I will keep my eye out for new readers though but I like this one from OWC
Okay! A few 4.0 early-adopters tripping the light fantastic with CFexpress Type A 4.0, double-speeds 🤓
I do like the construction quality of the OWC USB4 reader. However, I will probably also purchase the Exascend USB4 reader whenever it comes out so I can have access to their card maintenance software for my Exascend card.
I'm also looking to see what Anglebird comes out with for CFe Type A 4.0 too.
For now I'm running the Exascend 1TB 4.0 in slot one and the Anglebird 1TB 2.0 in slot two on the Sony A1 camera. I've done some in-camera write speed tests between these two cards and "as expected" both write almost equally in-camera since the A1 doesn't support CFexpress 4.0.

How's your Exascend speed compared to Guy's OWC?
See my two test results at the start of the thread ( first post)
-I used 4GB ATTO Disk Benchmark Write Pattern 0x00000000
-For Video, I used AJA Video Systems App 4GB 5120x2700 5K RED, 16bit RGBA ( settings from AlikGriffin.com )

I was just going to buy a couple OWC Ultra SD cards to use as my "Fast" slot 1 always in the camera. Then I saw Sony had their CFexpress cards on sale, then I saw Lexar also had cards on sale (cheap). Now you guys are talking about these new card 4.0 spec... (I read all the CFexpress posts from the bast 12 months in the Sony Forum)
I currently do not need the size of the OWC 480GB as I was going to buy 2x 160GB gen 3, one per camera. But the whole reason to get these is faster download to computer. I only shoot A7IV cameras and a days shooting is about 3k images per camera. So nothing too heavy. The gen 3 would still be a big improvement over my SD card download speed. BUT I hate to invest into tech that is sort of on it's way out... I guess I have to ask myself do I want to invest $520 for 2x 160GB Lexars and 2x readers or $860 for the OWC setup... $350 extra... I know I'd feel better about the OWC route, lots of extra space if I shot heavy and the faster DL speed would make me smile. Both not really needed at this time but...

Exactly what I have now. Card and same reader. I want to buy 1 more 480 card
$319.99 for a 480GB CFexpress 4.0 Type A memory card up to 2x faster than CFexpress 2.0 is quite some price relief compared to when Sony first launched their CFexpress 2.0 Type A 160GB memory cards for $399!
Good to hear from Art this card's VPG200 as opposed to VPG400 rating is not affecting any video operations on the Sony camera he tested too, to include 8K 24p.

Who doesn't love Art I watch his videos even when I'm not in the market for what he's reviewing!!
I couldn't wait for your responses and ordered 2 cards and a reader. Should be here tomorrow...
When you guys get your 2 card simultaneous download set up running it would be fun to hear where the system bottlenecks... I only bought one reader to start but I just got paid so...

I'm not planning to buy another USB4 card reader until Exascend comes out with theirs, supposedly later this Summer.
For now I am happy with just the one OWC USB4 reader. So far looks to be a high quality build with good heat management which is important since these CFexpress 2.0 and 4.0 cards can get hot when pushing large amounts of data.
Also, the OWC USB4 reader ships with a good OWC cable also 240W capable so am using that cable for double duty aka charging and transferring data for some of my other USBC devices too.

Yes the reader is really nice works with my Type 3 cards as well. I’ll see what may come out later but this one works great. I got several jobs out of state so I’ll use it with laptop as well as my Mac Studio . Trying to sell my Type 3 cards and get another 480 OWC card

Slightly off topic, but quite surprising that Sony didn't add CFExpress 4.0 rails to the a9 III. I guess they are waiting to launch that in the a1 Mk II update?

On A9iii release not sure we had any Type 4 cards
My only damn in this is I wish my A7CR could use Type A as well
