Hello,

I've been using the BlackRapid sling straps for years, but just wondered if they're still the best option? My fear is always that they connection point will fail and that my 600mm will crash to the ground. Any slings with stronger components?

Thanks in advance!

I greatly prefer the Peak Design straps over the Blackrapid.

I haven't seen instances of either brand or style failing, but it is just a lot more comfortable to wear and inspires more confidence.

Thanks for the reply!

I have heard of a few BlackRapid failures, but continue to knock on wood on my end.

For the Peak Designs sling strap, I imagine that the whole strap shifts around your body as you raise up your camera? It isn't just a slide along the strap?

I took my "lowly" Sony 100-400 out with my Peak Design Strap a couple of weeks ago. Which I haven't used that combo in quite a while. I paid for my sins from doing that. I developed a muscle spasm between my shoulder blade and spine that lasted a good 8 days by the time it subsided.

I would recommend the Cotton Carrier G3 Harness. I even use it for my Sony 24-105 or Viltrox 16mm f1.8. Even my Sigma 105 macro. It just helps this old guy carry gear more comfortably.

That's right. The idea with the PD Slide is the seatbelt material is fairly slippery so the strap matches its name and slides up the body easily. The full size Slide and the Slide Lite also have a one side where the shoulder area has grippy material--the idea is you flip the strap over if you don't want the camera to be slidable.

blackrapid has had more than a few failures since its inception. they have changed out their connector "design" more than a few times too. i had an original one and after giving it a good look i decided that it was not a good option with my stuff.

moved to play with peak designs option when it came out and found it had its issues. the clip assy build on both sides are polymer on top and spring steel on the base. wasn't too fond of the potential metal to metal contact (camera to clip). the lollypops were replaced on 3 separate occasions voluntarily by them due to design/QC issues (strength). recent variation is good and strong. the rest of the strap assy really is nothing to brag about. more looks than anything.

in my opinion a more reliable setup is the Military based QD setup. designed for weapons carry has very low chance of disconnecting.

i've been using these for over 10 years now.

I think this is right.

In my recent research, it appeared that some variation on a military-style QD rifle sling attached to a lens foot baseplate or arca-swiss clamp with a QD socket (from a vendor like Really Right Stuf or Kirk) seemed the most robust of the options to sling a supertelephoto lens.

E.g., RRS lens foot plate (https://reallyrightstuff.com/lcf-53-lens-foot-for-select-canon-telephoto-lenses/) plus often recommended Magpul sling (https://reallyrightstuff.com/magpul-gen-2-ms4-dual-qd-sling/).

you'd be right about that but there are others that are relatively close. i use RRS pretty much exclusively. in my opinion they work hard towards being ahead of the curve and they pretty much are.

the one basic rule for anything you use, inspect/check, test all equipment before you leave your base.

Is there a specific brand for those connectors or are they from RRS too?
