p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Vietnam and Cambodia

Went to Vietnam and Cambodia for a few weeks. It didn't help that I hurt my lower back the day we left and suffered for the first week with it, making enjoyment of anything tough. All this in extremely hot humid conditions mostly in the south of Vietnam and Cambodia. It was 39 Deg C every day we were in Siem Reap where Angkor Wat is. I took the 14-30 f4 and the 24-120 f4 which served me well and probably used the 24-120 95% of the time.

Anyway, here are a few images.

It's almost impossible to get a shot of Ha Long Bay without a boat/ship in the photo somewhere! So, I sometimes made them a focal point.

1) Ha Long Bay

5) Huế

6) Tam Giang–Cau Hai Lagoon

8) Hội An

10) Angkor Wat
A World Heritage site

Very beautiful pictures, Lance!
Did you use 1 or 2 bodies?

Thank you very much, Riccardo. Much appreciated!

Only the one body, the Z8.

However, I could have used another body - a new body for me as my back was killing me for the first week!

Beautiful shots, Lance. I spent a week in Cambodia 25+ years ago, but have yet to make it to Vietnam. You're inspiring me to get back to Asia!

Thanks for sharing. I was there in 2011 and it sure brings me back.
There is something in the air over there that really makes everything look smooth.
Back then I had a 5D classic and a whole arsenal of prime lens. Today I would probably use a similar kit as you.

*Very* interesting Lance.

There is a lot of positive to be said for their culture. And I've always respected the Monk choice of life.

The wall on the left side of #12 looks like it was tooled from one piece of rock. Then there is the recess all along the waterline of the rock in Ha Long Bay. Is all the rock in the area limestone?

I converted C to F. 100+ degrees every day? Not for me my friend

And taking just the Z8 says a lot about your confidence in it. I am happy with mine too.

Thanks for the story Lance

Robert

Thank you very much, Chris. Much appreciated!

We missed a couple of sites in Vietnam that I wanted to go to but forgot to go to them. Partly due to my bad back taking my mind elsewhere but also we were with a private tour with just another couple and my wife and I and we already had a packed itinerary. One was the incense village where they make the incense:

Thank you very much, Alskouba. Much appreciated!

It's a lovely place and would love to go back and do some things I missed - without a bad back!

Thank you very much, Robert. Much appreciated!

The Monk's choice is an interesting lifestyle choice. You can actually do it for a short stint as did our guide's father at around the age of 50 for a 3 or 6 month period (can't remember the exact time frame). Their pacifist ideal is great, I guess as long as everyone else is a pacifist it would work.

Many of those stones at Angkor Wat are one piece and huge but I don't know about the one you are talking about.

The rocks at Ha Long Bay are mostly limestone.

The Z8 never missed a beat. It got very hot in Siem Reap, as we all did as it was 39Deg C (102F) and the bottom left of the Z8 did get quite warm but this is a known Z8 thing - the bottom left of the camera can get quite warm during extended use.

An interesting thing was this carving in the rock at Angkor Wat:

This is a carving of what appears to be a stegosaurus! The carving would possibly be about 800+ years old, way before anyone ever knew about dinosaurs.

Great shots Lance and well done under the circumstances. I have an L2-L3 disc herniation from Feb 1st this year and I'm only just starting to enjoy picking up the camera again. I now appreciate how something like that happening can take away interest from even the things we love. Glad you ended up having a great trip still though by the looks of it! Heal well and speedy recovery!

Thank you very much, Rich. Much appreciated!

Sorry to hear about your back issues as well but good to hear you're on the mend, although after a very long time! It really does take away enjoyment of even the simplest things. I hope you are back to 100% soon!!

great set.

i enjoyed my visit in cambodia. the people were genuine and hardworking; especially when you venture into the rural village and away from the city.

i assumed you flew into the recently-built airport (with funding support from china)?
