Hi,

I don't use a tripod at all nowadays and not planning on using one that much. But for some travels where I travel by car and the weight is not a burden I'm planning on trying one out.

I'm looking at these two relatively cheap models. I'm wondering if anybody has any experience with them or any insights on helping me choose between them.

My camera setup is a Sony A7CR + Tamron 20-40mm f2.8 most of the time. So body + lens weight is always around 1kg.

My own length is: 189cm (6ft2)

Tripod 1: Ulanzi F38 travel tripod

Price: 229 euro's

Max height (with center column raised): 1590 mm
Net Weight 1.1 kg
Folded Length: 425mm

I like that the Ulzani comes with an extra centre post for A-S (or whatever), and it shows the post mounted upside down (head near ground). OTOH, the dedicated centre-post doesn't have a ball head per se; it looks more like a pano rotation head, with no leveling capability. Not very versatile. You could add a ball head to the Ulzani QR plate, but the overall price is heading in the wrong direction, quickly.

The SmallRig is a little more simple and plain, but it does have a 'real' ball head, and the text mentions it has hidden (retracted?) spike feet, which can be very useful. It's quite possible that the SmallRig centre-post will go in upsidedown, but it's not shown. I use a lot of SmallRig clamps and light panels, and they're all good products.

My solution for this 'weight' of travel tripod is the Gitzo GT-0540CF tripod + RRS BH-25 head, which I bought in 2008. Usually, I prefer to go heavier (Feisol Traveler CT-3441S + BH-30), or lighter (FLM CP10-A1 tabletop).
