New for me anyway. I've shot with the flash in manual mode, and with the flash heads in a key and fill configuration with a Kaiser Adjustable Flash Shoe. But this is the first time I've done both, and set the fill one stop under the key. Still working on the diffusion, even though I like now it looks now.

Went looking for a test target for a new diffusion and flash setup and found this Soft Winged Flower Beetle on a Buttercup.

Tech Specs: Canon 90D (F11, 1/125, ISO 200) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (set to 2x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT, manual mode, key (A) on a Kaiser Adjustable Flash Shoe set to 1/16 and the fill (B) set to 1/32. This is a single frame taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Photo AI and Clarity in that order.

If you click on the link to the right of the image it will take you to my Flickr gallery where you should be able to zoom in on the critter.

Here's another shot with the way I'm lighting the critters now. I only posted this one to Imgur cause it was just a test shot (nothing special). Link to original image.

Not finished with the light yet, but definitely moving in the right direction.

For most of the scenes that I shoot the flash settings are holding up pretty well. But this one came in really close to being correctly exposed, and I like the err on the side of under exposure.

So I've set the key to 1/16 -1/3 and the fill to 1/32 -1/3. Took some test shots yesterday of a Rose Chafer beetle and I liked it. Image was roughly 2/3 of a stop under exposed (coincidence).
