Thoughts on purchasing a 1Dx Mark II in 2024?

p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Thoughts on purchasing a 1Dx Mark II in 2024?

I borrowed this camera from CPS years ago when it cost $8,000 and I loved it. I know it's heavy. I know it's bulky. I like the heft and don't mind the bulk. I like the 14FPS, I like the AF speeds, I like the F8 autofocusing, etc etc etc.
I don't see any for sale at the moment but in previous sales they went between $900-$1100...which just boggles the mind how such a camera can go for so little.
I can't afford nor need the 1Dx Mark III and I'm not looking to go mirrorless.
Is there any reason not to get a 1Dx Mark II now? (this would be a second camera along with my trusty 6D Mark II). I might be able to swing it in the next couple of months if one goes for sale...

Would love your input.

I don't know why anyone would buy a DSLR body in 2024.

But, if that's your prerogative for some reason - I don't think a used 1Dx II is the worst decision you could make.

The only thing you might run into is difficulty selling when/if you try to. It's an 8 year old body that's already depreciated 90%. Most people would just shelve it instead of try to sell it at that point.

It also only has 2 years of support from Canon before they stop servicing it.

The only reason NOT to go for it, IMO, is if you can afford and want a more modern camera. I'm sure it would be a great complement to your 6DII.

As someone who owned every Canon FF 1-series except the 1DX3, I can't think of a reason other than self defense why I'd get a 1DX2 over an R6 for about the same price. I know you said that you're not looking to go mirrorless, without giving a reason why not, so it sounds a bit like prejudice. Personally, the moment I got the R (the OG) I basically stopped using my DSLRs except for special purposes, and when I got the R5 I sold everything else, including the 1DX2.

If durability is your concern, my two R5 survived a full day in the rain better than a good number of A1s, in other words about as good as my 1DX and 1DX2.

Honestly, photography is not always about the destination. Sometimes, it's the journey. Mirrorless might have some benefits, but if shooting with a professional-grade DSLR gives you pleasure, then who are we to steer you otherwise?

That camera is one of the best. I owned two of them until 2022.

Two reasons why I'm not very excited about switching to mirrorless. First, form factor. I haven't done a ton of research yet but it seems the R5 and R6 require battery grips, whereas a 1DxII has that built in. I don't love small cameras. Used to own a Fuji mirrorless and it was awkward to handle. Second issue is price. Quick check on the B&S forum shows the R6 is 2x the price of a used 1DxII and the R5 is almost 3x the price. I and everyone I photograph (for free, this is a hobby not a job for me) loves the quality of my images out of the 6DII. I'm sure I will be satisfied with the images out of the 1DxII.

If you don't mind the weight (the only reason I would consider selling mine) I still think it is a great camera. I still use mine with my Sigma 500mm f4 and my 100-400L. While I see the advantages of mirrorless especially the eye tracking for wildlife they are not perfect like many users claim they are. When I swing up mine with the Sigma attached it is always ready to fire away. Higher ISO is good and the pixels can take a lot of abuse in post. Like Jethro Tull song, "Living in the past" is not all bad.

I say buy the 1DX2, but I'm a bit prejudiced, and a lot old fashioned. I am currently using a 90D and a 6DII. Both these cameras, together, can do just about everything I need to do with a camera. Up until 2-3 years ago, I was shooting a lot of film: 35mm in Canon SLRs (Elan 7NE, EOS 1N, 1V), and 120 in Pentax 645N & various 6x6 folders. Now my photography is fully digital, and I am happy with DSLRs, though I do miss the Mamiya 6ivB. That was a wonderful camera that even worked nicely with my 580EXII.

Last December, I gave in to the siren call of mirrorless. I bought an R10, 18-45, RL-100, and a control ring adapter. After 60-some days of playing, experimenting, familiarizing, and yes, actually using the R10, I learned one thing: I prefer to work with a DSLR. I like the size/weight/heft, and the results I get with the gear I already own. What I liked least about the R10? It is puny. It looks silly hanging off the back of the 70-200 2.8, or even a 24-70 2.8, and the whole setup is way unbalanced. The biggest down-side to mirrorless (for me) is the whole mirrorless part. The EVF is fine for static, stationary subject. It is a near-instant headache for moving subjects. I sold the R10 package on E-Bay.

It seems quite strange to intentionally choose a puny camera and then complain about it being puny...

There are lots of mirrorless cameras out there that are more substantial, without being boat anchors like the old DSLRs.

I get it, if it's personal preference then so be it. I just figured that someone who's posting about buying a 500L and a 1DX2 isn't only interested in the journey but also the output, if I cared about the journey I'd take the T90 out of my closet and the Agfa Ultra 50 out of the freezer again.

The 1DX2 sold for $6k and not $8k at introduction, the 1DS series bodies cost $8k but the 1DX were cheaper because of competitive pressure then. You should be able to find used R6 not too far north of $1k at this point, certainly less than 2x the price of the 1DX2, not that it matters.

FM is too negative on DSLR'S. Nothing wrong with wanting a new camera, i suppose but It requires a computer to participate, so that probably ups the tolerance and desire for technology.

You probably already know the negatives, I don't really see 14fps not being enough. If you watch football, usually you see the photographers using DSLR'S, and I'd guess lots of those are 1Dx2's.

Some discussion on price, my Rebel XT $800, some of the R aps actually less than that before factoring in inflation, even! Cameras are relatively cheap these days, but even inexpensive cameras can be very good performing

I certainly agree with you on the price/value analysis, but with regards to the lack of a built-in grip, your critique of the R5/R6 could be applied to nearly all DSLRs as well.

For what it's worth, the R3 is the functional equivalent of a 1Dx-series camera on the mirrorless side. Presumably, the forthcoming R1 will also have an integrated grip.

These cameras are considerably more expensive though.

I will never give up my 1Dx II. No other camera - which I've used - comes close to its speed, power, and importantly its durability. If you've never been nailed on the sideline of a HS football game, well… Nothing beats it for sports, animals, and anything that's moving.

A little stunned that they are selling for < 1K. Oh well, not my problem.

I think my R3 would disagree

Fair enough. The R, RP, R6, R62, R5, R7, R10, R50, R100 are all significantly smaller/lighter than my 90D. That happens to be one of the selling points for R-series cameras: smaller/lighter. To get an R-series camera that is larger/heavier than my 90D, I'd have to buy and R3.

Boat anchor? I don't get the animosity. I re-read my post just to be sure I didn't insult anyone, or their gear, I merely expressed a preference.

It's a fairly common metaphor for something big, heavy, and outdated. There's no animosity in that, unless you're one of those people who feel any opinion contrary to their own is hostile.

Models in 'Excellent' condition (with reasonable shutter counts) seem to be selling for between $1,500 and $1,700 on MPB, which seems about right to me.

Ok, I'll take that one. I interpreted the 'boat anchor' comment to be derogatory, and at least in my head, I blamed you for that. I don't know you; I shouldn't ascribe intent to your comments. I must admit, when someone is really proud of their '57 Buick Roadmaster, I've referred to it as a 'lead sled'. Same-same.

As mentioned, I am old(er) and a bit old-fashioned. I'm just trying to get along in a photographic world that moving on without me (by my choice, anyway). Totally different topic, but I have way more faith and confidence in old-fashioned revolvers than newer semi-automatics. And I still print my better shots (camera, not gun), and hang them in the house.

I've owned every 1D and 1Ds series camera, up to an including the 1D C, and loved every one of them... but I could never go back to using one now.
