I am looking to buy a used Canon R5. I am looking to buy no later than end of July as we are doing a month long trip to/through/back from Alaska mid August. So I do have time to wait, and I am hoping that an announcement on the new R5 II will result in more R5 cameras available and at better prices (that 1.38 CDN/US exchange rate is a killer!).

I have built a list of links to various places that I check with some regularity. As I learned last year when somebody here pointed me to a site in Canada, there can be gems out there I know nothing about. I ended up getting a heck of a deal on a mint Canon EF 500mm f/4 II.

So I am curious about what sites folks here have found to be hidden (or not so hidden) gold mines for deals on used gear (especially Canon).

I usually check first the Buy and Sell here on FM. Also checks prices on Used Photo Pro and MPB. Private sellers generally offer the best prices, UPP and MPB offer the option of returns and warranties. Buy from whoever you feel the most comfortable with.

jcw1982, FM is definitely first on my list. Used Photo is on it too. I didn't have MPB on it because every time I looked it was waaay over priced. For example, right now the lowest used price on a R5 is L2949 or $5085 with six month warranty. I can buy a new one in Canada for $4200 and have a one year warranty. Their pricing makes no sense. I figure I must be missing something but I can't see what.

I buy small items (filters, batteries, etc.) on MPB. I haven’t purchased any cameras/lenses because the prices are on the high side for used gears.

I wondered how long it would take before you showed up. You will notice that in the post you linked I said "If you are looking for a used item in CANADA [my emphasis here] ..." and that in this post I placed no such restrictions.

I wouldn't say I found it. Somebody pointed me to it when I was looking for that used canon 500mm f/4 II. Camtec in Montreal. I had never heard of them before. I suspect it was an estate sale on consignment but it was an excellent price of an item in mint condition.

Another place that I had a very good experience with years ago was Simon's Cameras, also in Montreal, but it closed several years ago.

I have bought much of my gear recently from McBain's in Alberta. Competitive prices for Canada and good shipping policies. I found them pretty helpful too.

I have used Camera Canada before; no issues.

One store I won't deal with is Don's. Over the years I had bought 5 figures worth of gear but the first time I had a problem with something (image banding (in a camera I bought from them), which I heavily documented in words and photos), they wouldn't help me at all deal with Canon. That was my last dealings with them, and it will remain so.

Thanks Everlearning,,, I don't believe I've ever stopped in to Camtec, but I've driven by msny times. I'll have to drop in next time I'm in the city. My go to in Montreal was always L.L. Lozeau, but sadly, they were bought out by Henry's, then closed a few years ago. They had been in business since 1927 I believe.

I bought much of my current gear from TheCameraStore in Calgary, but their discount pricing doesn't seem quite as competitive lately. (last 3 or 4 years).

I've always bought lenses and cameras "new", and I've only bought a couple of "used" tripods. All my lights/strobes/flash were bought new, from Adorama, while my C-stands and boom arms came from Vistek.

My " latest buy" in camera bodies goes back a way now,,, a Nikon D-810 and a D-500. I'm feeling the "itch" for trying a morrorless, but my wallet seems to have puckered up beyond "tight".

My first stop is a local store that I sell a lot of my old gear to...they have an awesome selection of used stuff, and generally it's reasonably priced. If they don't have something, or it's too much, I'll look at MPB or KEH, and also here. I've been doing less here just because I have less stress about the shipping process either way, not that I've had any bad experiences here. My last few online used purchases have been with MPB and I've had very good success with them.

Bought some here, feeling like eBay might be good if you manage it right

MPB has a boatload of like new, ~$2700 USD, but is that enough less to justify buying used?

$2700USD or $1M CDN. oh wait, the exchange rate has improved. It is "only" $3700CDN ($4144 with taxes). I will be waiting for prices to come down further on used; likely when the R5 II is announced and there is more gas than at a bean convention.

It always looks like a deal until you factor in exchange, duty, and local taxes when buying cross borders, I’m in Canada also, it can get kinda frustrating looking for used deals. Depending were you are I check kijiji regularly but in Manitoba the crickets are usually chirping there’s rarely anything im interested in for any kinda deal.

It also seems like when I do find something with a price I might go for, the seller only ships to continental US or is looking for "net" so with the Paypal fees and shipping costs, it is no longer the deal it looked to be.

Such is life for the Canadian gear shopper.
