Just tried to update my a7Cii downloading to my Mac M1 and the process produced BODYDATA.DAT file that was marked "Unable to identiy file".

I was unable to move it to my SD card or do anything else with it. The "Letter Opener" app popped up, but it was not helpful.

Anyone else having this problem? Am I missing something?

I don't have this camera but I just downloaded the file and its shows as a Text Edit file for me, size is 1.04GB
Try clicking Get Info and changing the OpenWith to TextEdit and see if it will recognize it then.

If not try downloading again, the file may have been corrupted.

Thanks for taking the time to look at this.

Mine also shows as a 1.04 GB file. The Computer immediately opens the Letter Opener app, which is used to open Windows Mail, so this is probably a Text Edit file, the file is not opened by the Letter Opener app.

I have tried downloading several times, with the same result.

I could try this on my Windows machine to see if I have more luck, but I think I'll just leave it for a week and see if Sony can get its act together.

Thanks again!

You need to install the Sony MacOS drivers first if I remember correctly.

Letter openers uses DAT files, so I think you just need to turn that App off or stop it automatically opening DAT files and you should then be able to drag it into an SD card.

You could remove permissions to the App in Files and Folders (security) so it can't access the file.

The main problem was with the "Letter Opener" app which "hi-jacked" the BODYDATA.DAT file to open it, but then would/ could not.

So, I removed the Letter Opener app. A hurdle remained in that now VLC wanted to open the file, but Mac wouldn't let it do that from the download tabe saying "VLC is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to trash". Hitting the "move to trash option then left me with no app to open the file. But, I went into a Finder window and dragged the BODYDATA.DAT file, VLC tag and all, on the desktop and then onto the SD card. The install then seems to have gone fine.

So, a bit of maintainance on my Mac may be required to delete/ reinstall VLC, but so far so good.

Thanks again for your help!

Sony firmware update procedure has always been a little unstable with Mac. Android/windows territory I guess I wish it was better, but following instructions to the letter usually helps.

I've given up on any kind of update using Mac. I have to negotiate with my son to use his gaming PC to update my camera.

Could you point to source where this path is described?

I updated my a7rV and a7cR on my Mac. Download the BODYDATA.DAT file, when you do, Mac add's "(1)" to the file name for some reason. (like it's the 2nd copy of a file you downloaded) Change the name and take out "(1)" so it just reads "BODYDATA.DAT" in the download folder, then just drop it onto a pre-formatted card and insert it into the body and follow the update guide.

Could be that I just got lucky but it went exactly like the instructions on the site, from a Pixel 3a running Android 12, I have had used the Creators App extensively with my a7CII so I have my sony account logged in and camera paired with bluetooth etc (for location link).
