I'm having major envy of Nikon's PF primes. I've heard about the supposed Canon 200-500 f4, but any rumors of new, lighter primes? a reboot of the DO series? or even a redesign of their 600 f4?

Just a whole lot of radio silence from Canon. Seems like they've locked down the rumor mill pretty good.

The RF 600F/4 is already pretty light an optically excellent. Don't think you'll see a new one of those for a while though.

Considering the Olympics coming in the summer, it would be a good time to announce something along with the R5II and/or R1. I think most bets are on the 200-500. IMO such a lens would make sense as an Olympics announcement focused at sports/journalism use.

I'm sure the 200-500 would be amazing, but likely bigger than the 100-300, right? I'd love something like Nikon's 600 f6.3.

Definitely. The 100-300 is 12.7" long and 5.8lb. The EF200-400 is 14.4" and 8lb. They'd likely shave a little weight off the RF200-500 like they did with the 100-500 vs EF100-400 II, but it'll still be a big lens.

The RF 100-300mm f/2.8L is about a half-pound heavier than the EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II prime it replaces, but a half-pound lighter than the original EF 300mm f/2.8L IS. Which is a win, since the additional flexibility comes without much added weight.

I am expecting something similar for the 200-500. Probably somewhere in between the 7lb 500L IS Mark II and the 8.5lb 500L IS. Laws of physics, optics, and materials suggest anything lighter than this would be difficult to achieve in a zoom having IS.

Yes it should be quite a bit bigger. Based on what they did with the 300 I would expect a 200-500 f/4 to be about 16" long and 7.5lbs.

The RF 400/600 super telephotos are great. I have the 400 2.8, while some complain of no redesign from the EF version, it is up to date with current Nikon and Sony in terms of weight. Only Nikon have the built in TC is a plus but for a lot more money. Not just by list price but actual real world price.
I know the zooms like the 100-300 2.8 or 200-500 f4 will be great but I canít help but wonder about the weight, they will certainly weigh more then prime 500 f4 which was never updated to version 3. Imagine an rf 500 f4 would be less the the 3kg of the 400 2.8, modern optics and design. I would loved canon to redo the 300 2.8 prime in rf if sure if would be close to the Sony weight.

Could we get a 200-600 or even a 150-600? Canon made a 150-600 fd lens and everyone else seems to be able to make a 200-600.

Yes, Canon should get on the ball with a new RF 300 f2.8 that can match the Sony's.

Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM..............................5.29 lb / 2400 g, plus adapter for mirrorless body

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/2.8G ED VR II.............6.38 lb / 2900 g, plus adapter for mirrorless body

Sony FE 300mm f/2.8 GM OSS..................................3.24 lb/ 1470 g

What's the weight with their 2x extender? Probably still under 4.5lbs for a 600 f/5.6? Amazing setup.

I too am frustrated with Canon's direction and lack of compete of late. I guess they feel they are in good shape with there big primes selection along with the really nice but horribly expensive 100-300mm F2.8. I have the RF600mm F4 and it's a really good lens. I would love to see Canon address the mid price range telephoto lens segment that's being dominated by Nikon now. I had a chance to use the Nikon 600mm F6.3 and a Z8 on my recent bald eagle tour in Alaska and was extremely impressed by the lens. Such a pleasure to handhold with the fast action photography we had. I also had the chance to use the Nikon 180-600mm and the Sony 200-600mm on a A7V. Both of those are extremely nice lenses and made me want to throw my 100-500mm into the ocean. The readout speed of the Z8 was very noticeable after shooting the R5 since it came out. Made it so much easier to keep up with the fast moving eagles. Didn't see any advantages of the Z8 vs R5 in AF.

Really hoping Canon answers Nikon in the telephoto segment but I have my doubts...

Rumor has it there's a 200-800, but my November pre-order of this mythical lens remains M.I.A.

I felt pretty stupid for listening to the people having intense desires for nikon teles on here after running into a guy using the 500/5.6. He had it on a Z9 and a tripod!!! Not lightweight setup

The Z9 is close 2x the weight of the R5, Z8 still the weight of a big DSLR which is supposedly so heavy according to the mirrorless crowd.

Canon already one upped the competition since their recently released 200-600 goes to 800mm. Nobody else has a 100-300, either. Z9 + 500/5.6 isn't much, if any, lighter than the 400/4 on the R5

I would like to see an aperture chart comparison for these mega-zooms that show the respective apertures at each focal length. The Canon 200-800, Sony 200-600, and Nikon 180-600, and might as well throw in the Canon 100-500

RF400mm F2.8 L IS USM / 6.37 lbs / $11,999.00
R5 / 1.63 lbs / $2,999.00
R3 / 2.23 lbs / $4,499.00

NIKKOR Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S / 3.24 lbs / $4,799.95
Z8 / 2.00 lbs / $3,699.95
Z9 / 2.95 lbs / $5,499.95

Don't get me wrong, I prefer my R3 to the Z8 or Z9, but the ability to get a Z8 + 600 6.3 for less $$$ than just the Canon lens and at ~2.75 lbs less makes a lot of sense if you mainly shoot birds at around f8. That lens is about the same weight as the Canon RF 100-500.

Iíd like to see a re-design for one of these. Hey Canon. Where is my RF 500 or 600 5.6.

I would love to see Canon go back to designing some telephotos utilizing DO glass that emphasize weight, size with good performance in a more affordable price range.. I had the EF400mm F4DO and loved it, an RF version would be welcome. Something along the lines of a 600mmF5.6 or 500 4.5 or F5 would be awesome and carves out a niche without bringing out the same FL and aperture lens as Nikon. I had the Nikon 600mm F5.6 many moons ago and it was really nice. I think canon could make a killer 600mm F5.6DO that would be priced between the Nikon 600mm F6.3 and the 800mm F6.3. I'm afraid if the rumored Canon 200-500mm F4 is announced you're looking at 15K and I can't see it being very light.

I got so tired of waiting on Canon to put out some new quality long glass, I just gave up. I was hoping for more information on the 200-500 last year, but that too is still nothing more than just talk at this point. Quite disappointing. I had sold off my 600 F4 ll and 500 F4 ll a while ago (the 500 F4 ll being my favorite all time lens). I was expecting Canon to release an RF 500, but that didnít happen and I was never impressed with the RF 600. I do however have a Sigma 500 F4 to use for now.

Therefore, I recently purchased the Z8/Z9 along with the 800 F6.3 and 600 F6.3Ö mainly for portability.

I kept all of my Canon gear because I do like using it. However, the Nikon gear fills a gap and the lenses are a pleasure to useÖ very light weight and portable.
