I still use mine from time to time. Not so much because it has a special look or some sort of pixie dust. But I like the fact it's a pure photo camera. No video, no auto iso, no EVF. Down back to the basics of how a camera functions and I enjoy that. I enjoy the photos it can still crank out especially for social media where 12MP is more than enough.

I’m not the one making up imaginary people supposedly claiming that every time a new camera is introduced the old ones become obsolete so that I can argue with myself.

Again, my position on this, as in my previous posts in this thread — which you could always actually read:

The Canon 5D was a remarkable and even revolutionary camera when it came out in 2005. I owned one and it was one of the best cameras available at the time. A good copy will still work as well today as it worked in 2005. If you are happy with a 5D and want to keep using it, feel free. At the same time, in the 18+ years since the 5D was introduced, camera manufacturers have continued to improve cameras — just as they did when the introduced the 5D. They have increased dynamic range, improved resolution, refined AF, improved high ISO performance, added things like live view and video capabilities, and more recently moved to newer sensor technologies and mirrorless designs. These things have continued the progress that the 5D marked in 2005. If one doesn’t care about those things and like the 5D, then it is fine to use it. If one prefers to take advantage of newer cameras, there are good reasons for that, too.

See, no need to say the 5D sucks or that all older cameras are obsolete. No need to tell everyone that they must rush out and buy the latest, greatest camera. No need to make up phony points to argue with.

There was nothing magic about the D700 except it worked and was reliable, some people found that magical. I shot the D3 for years from weddings to sports, (same sensor). It focused, had excellent iso performance that didn't scare you to avoid iso1600+ . Could hammer nails with it you couldn't find a hammer. However, I always thought the original 5D had better colors and more acuity below iso1600 for static type images. If you need to eye focus gnats (or ducks) at iso150,000 get something new. I still enjoy looking through a bright mirror box VF with zero lag and without the stupid blue boxes all over the screen. YMMV

Most of the responses to this thread were to some degree pertaining to the OP’s title question, as to the 5D’s viability in 2024, and is own opinion, that he profoundly believes that it is.

Most of your responses, rather than reflecting on, or responding to the OP’s praise of the Canon 5D, were directed at other members, with narcissistic, vain chastising, implying that their thoughts and views are all pitifully flawed in one way or another, while all of yours are totally, intellectually indisputable.

It's easy to see it as a cheap, old, camera, now, but it was $3299 at intro. Really a historical, ground breaking camera bringing FF more to the masses at much lower cost than the 1Ds series. I find the Classic moniker fitting on this historically significant camera

I remember putting a 50/1.8 on it and thinking how it actually focused quite well, using 1.8, unlike the other bodies I'd used. And I recently read a DPR article about a guy who used his D2000 (1998) to photograph 2005 March Madness!!! So especially if you use center point you might do OK.

High iso seemed much better than the 40D, even though the 40D a few years newer. I wish I'd shot 1600+ more, but the few I shot looked much cleaner than 800 on the 40D, hard to believe it's more than 2 stops better though (3200 better than 800.) I'd like to pick one up someday and use the high iso more, to see how it does, probably more banding etc than newer bodies seemed pretty clean imo though

The 5D CLASSIC had a magical rendering, but is near useless for me today. Now I will get all sides against me

Speaking of “narcissistic, vain chastising, implying that their thoughts and views are all pitifully flawed in one way or another, while all of yours are totally, intellectually indisputable,” …do you own a mirror? ;-)

My first introduction to the 5D was purely to make a profit. I spotted a Craigslist ad that had a 5d and 70-200 f2.8 for something like $1200. The ad said the camera had some problem with it but didn't know what it was. She was a professional photographer and just bought a new camera instead of dealing with it. I looked at it and the camera seemed to working as far as I could tell but the lens had a ton of scratches. I don't think I have ever seen a lens with that many. I offered $700 and she accepted. I thought I might just get a new front cell. I took the camera and lens to a zoo and when I got home I could not believe how great the pictures were. The scratches didn't seem to make any difference. I had been using a Sony A200 at the time and immediately decided to buy a Canon. I sold both the camera and lens for parts and made enough to buy a refurbished 5DII from Canon, but it didn't seem to get the same look as the 5D. I bought a 5D about 3 years for $200 so I could take that to the beach instead of my 6D, but now I have a R6II.

:-) I figured as much.

And, of course, the mind is where most magic takes place.

I bought mine used, too, though I never found out the story behind why the seller was not keeping it.

I came from a previous 8MP Canon DSLR, the first DSLR that I had owned. Although I had dabbled in digital with early digital cameras as far back as the mid-1990s (really), I had continued to rely on film. At some point I decided that I needed to get a DSLR and see if one could replace my film gear. I picked up a XTi and a couple of inexpensive lenses and put them to use. I liked the results, and when Canon "brought FF to the masses" with the 5D, I was ready to move all of my photography to digital.

I got that 5D and started acquiring EF lenses. It was a step up from the APS-C sensor on that XTi. (Today's APS-C cameras are also a big step up from that early sensor, and I now use one for half of my photography.)

Someone mentioned the cost of the original 5D. It is amazing to me is that the real-world, inflation-adjusted price of today's comparable (in terms of placement in the brand's line-up) R5 is actually significantly LOWER than what we paid for that 5D! The cameras continue to improve in important and useful ways, yet the real-world costs have continued to drop.

Have you seriously never had a lens or camera that performs above expectations for no apparent reason?

I can't say the no-magic arguments are terribly appealing.

As long as the images are appealing. That's what counts. Most of the stuff we use today, would appear to be magic, to folks from the Middle Ages. I have 8" x 10" light panels for my studio, with in-built rechargeables. They'll run for hours, with no apparent power source. They turn and of via bluetooth. This was in Sci-Fi movies not so long ago, and people thought, no way... Sorry, I got off topic.

The only way to say if anyone would be satisfied with a 5D in 2024 is to shoot with one and decide for yourself. I had one years ago and really loved the output. I recall that the photos didn't need much sharpening to look great, and I believe it had a rather weak AA filter contributing to the sharpness.

I stumbled across this NOS 5D in japan in 2018 for not too much more than market price at the time. I had the camera twice before over the years and let it go, I wanted one again, Prob has 2000 clicks on it now, not a single blemish. Was shooting regularly w nikon (810) at the time and was looking to come home again with canon mirrorless. For just a walk about for jpegs, focus recompose etc, still love it. Its 2005 every time I reach for it, who cares its 2024.

Pure click-bait. 96 seconds of overexposed sky. Or is the sky always white in California? I thought that was a Midwest thing from November through April?

It is a long time since I posted on FM...but this post caught my eye...

I have the 5D in my cupboard, not used it for a few years now but not worth selling. I recall some discussion on the IQ of this and the then 1 series sensors, and the opinion was that Canon needed to convince film users (the vast majority of photographers were using film at the time) that digital images could be a decent alternative visually; so designed sensors to give a film like quality to the images.

Over time this was not considered to be so important, and other factors took over, But looking back on my 5D files (and my 1Ds mk2 files); I suspect there was an element of truth in this.

I mainly do studio work and mainly use MF film or my 5D SR, but I'd be happy to pick up my 5D or 1Ds 2 again.....in fact this post has motivated me to do just that, if only to see how the 2024 PS handles the files. I suspect I will very happy with them.

Two things:

A functioning 5D works as well now as it did when it came out. But virtually everything since then has been as good or better — much better today.

The whole "film-like" thing is not real. I used a 5D and loved it, and it was no more "film like" than any of the other digital cameras I have used including several later models in the 5D line.
