I was watching this GBH hunt a ways from me and saw it get a vole. Then it took off flying towards me. I was hoping it wouldn't change direction, so I could get a good image. As I was following it and shooting, it dropped the vole. I kept panning, then it registered with me that there must be an eagle after it. Swinging back, sure enough, an eagle was going down for the vole. I got a few poor images of that, but did much better with it lifting off vole in talons. The vole looks much smaller in the eagle talons.

Great captures Rex. Either the heron saw the eagle with its peripheral vision or heard the rush of its wings. Any time I see herons peering up at the sky, most of the time it is because an eagle is overhead. They are terrified of eagles.

I think herons decimated the vole colony that was in a large field here. They were catching them every day.

Yes the heron knew the eagle was coming. It was trying to shake the vole off its beak as it had speared it. The nictitating membrane was down to protect from the flopping vole. Thanks Tony.
