I have 200-800, 200-400 and 600/f4 and R5 - and I think you will still be using software denoise at iso 12k even if the r5ii gets 1 stop better - because shooting at strong light just does not look as good as dusk and dawn - and you will want to keep your shutter speed up. 1 more stop will be nice but you will still want more ISO and reach performance. the R5 is okay now at 12k ISO and 200-800 (f9) but R5ii will just push me further into the dark.

I’m sure you are right.

There’s a persistent belief that some new sensor or sensor technology will make NR in post unnecessary. But for reasons you point out and others, that is very unlikely to happen even in our lifetimes. We tend to pick up a partial stop or maybe a stop of high ISO performance (eg. NR) in new sensor generations, but that doesn’t eliminate the need for NR.

There are plenty of situations n which we’re going to end up shooting at rather high ISOs. (For most of us — I can envision a few scenarios in which we’ll stick to low ISO no matter what.) If you shoot handheld, if you work in low light (indoors, outdoors in evening and early morning) and/or if you have to keep the shutter speed up (street photography, wildlife, sports, etc.) then you are still going to put up with some image noise at the time of exposure in order to use the shutter speeds and apertures you prefer.

There will be enough noise that you’ll want to reduce it in post.

Fortunately, the tools for doing that are getting better and better. The “enhance” feature in recent Adobe products is a case in point — I’ve been able to use images that were simply too noisy in the past, but which end up looking quite good after using this tool.

That's kinda funny b/c I'm looking forward to the R5 II exactly so I don't have to use software denoise as much for shots taken at high ISO. Should be a great body for the RF 100-500 and 200-800. For me no software is ever going to match an original file that starts with limited noise.

Hummm, even if I shoot at low ISO I use software to process birds? And 100 percent run it through Denoise. You using the 200-800 and 100-500 lens you are going to be in the same boat as I am with the 7DII. Or even worse , using the R5 or R5II noise wise. You will have an AF advantage that is it.
Unless the Canon R5II is ground breaking. Which I doubt. But, who knows.

I never owned the 7D2 but I borrowed it. Your post made me go back and dig up the raw files at ISO 1600, and I can sleep again knowing that even with the R5 I'm not in the same boat as you are with the 7D2, and I can't imagine the R5m2 being worse. Your opinion is of course cheaper for you.

Run the files through Denoise then get back to me. Cropping with the R5 is not any better than the bare 7DII IMO.. Only advantage is if you are filling the frame with full frame. I tried the R5 several times. I passed.. I am curious about the new R5II, to see if they have improved the sensor tech.

I have run them thru DXO, and that's why I got back to you. Not sure why I would crop the R5 images, though - I have lenses covering 10 to 800mm and bought a full frame 45MP camera for a reason, and not an R7.

Pixel level noise aside, the R5 is better than the 7D2 in many other areas than "just the AF," but you probably knew that already and just use it as hyperbole. Again, I'm genuinely happy that you like your camera. I like mine, too.

If you don't have to crop you are good to go. But, the 7DII is not much worse than the R5 as far as noise goes . Agree the AF is a huge reason to go with the R5.

My thoughts only, if cropping the R5 to 7DII . Noise is a little better with the R5, the image quality is also better. And the AF is way better of course. I am always having to sharpen the 7DII to try to get a better image.
With LR that has gone away. I can Denise , sharpen in one fell swoop. With no work what so ever.
Cropping for me is a must shooting birds. Even at 800-1200 equilivent I am often cropping 50% or even more. So, for me I find no advantage other than better AF between the R5 and 7D II at this point. And the R7 IMO is a not worth the price of popcorn. I would not own that camera if given to me after trying it out. And not because of image quality or noise.

Right, that is my point. I do have to use denoise now -- inferred as much in my post. That is why I'm looking forward to the R5 II. With a BSI stacked sensor it should have much better dynamic range than the R5. So shouldn't have to us denoise as frequently.

Not necessarily - in some cases the stacked sensors have less dynamic range.

Well... Here we are just hours away from the official announcements and still not a single leak.
To my knowledge, this is the first time Canon has achieved this level of security.
This doesn't make us gear heads happy campers, but you have to give them credit for pulling it off. Kudos to them!

Something tells me I'm going to regret not jumping in early on the R5II pre-orders as I suspect we're going to be pleasantly surprised in many ways with both the R5II and R1.

CR tweet. Says they were a bit off on pricing.

So maybe $500 more? Hopefully not more than that.

This will make for some interesting forum banter if true. I think most of the discussion would be to compare it with a Z8 which is at $3497. I'm betting the Canon R5II will have better AF, buffer, fps, EVF, and some other bells and whistles. So the $3999 price sounded about right. I guess we'll see how much higher it's priced, if the rumor is true. I'm planning on two new R5II's at the moment, but if the price is closer to 5k I'll wait it out and happily use my R5's until then.

So now CR says they have all the leaks but can't share them because they don't want to "burn" the source. I mean all the retailers have already been briefed, meaning there are 100s of different sources out there that could leak it.

What is the point of CR anymore??
Anyways, ironically SAR posted a short video showing a leaked specs of the R1 which was quickly taken off line...no surprises...just what has been rumoured already...24MP, 12/40FPS, 6K video etc.

I was told the price will be $300 more than expected, but there is no shortage of stock.
Why not if it's a much better camera than the Z8.

If those end up being the R1 specs I’m going to have to reevaluate my life choices…

"We were off a bit on the launch prices, the EOS R5 Mark II is higher than $3999, and the EOS R1 is lower than the $6499 that we reported."

https://www.canonrumors.com/here-are-a-couple-of-images-of-the-eos-r1-and-eos-r5-mark-ii/

Looking back, I got R5 at launch in 2020 for $3899.

Active cooling grip doesn't have a vertical shutter button. Makes sense as this is for video.
