“Ribsy” made up w a decent review here:

No indication of what shutter speed is used in auto (like most p&s) but it seems in manual mode as there is no exposure indication it is essentially meterless.
The camera does seem much better w this review. But I can still wait this out.

It seems to suffer from a number of poor/inconvenient design choices that were probably inevitable after Mint made the decision to imitate the original Rollei 35. At this stage I'm thinking they might have been better making a modern AF version of something like the Olympus 35 RC, which is equally small and doesn't suffer from weird film loading, a reverse film winder that wraps around the front, controls on the front body instead of top plate and lens, etc. There is a reason most cameras settled on a particular layout.

But I do hope it succeeds and leads to more film cameras being made.

Kamerastore got their hands on a test copy.

The lens looks better in their examples than other previews I've seen, but they really didn't like the film advance mechanism and panned some of the other design choices and ergonomics.

I wonder how many cameras will end up getting dropped when people try to open the back?

In previous reviews they showed a +/- meter in the micro-LCD on top.

New banner on the Rollei 35AF website: "Due to unexpected high demand, pre-orders will close on September 12, 2024, at 3:00 AM GMT."

I did the early bird pre-order thing for a black one. I hope I won't be putting dents in it by smacking it on my forehead.

I'm so over the design of new cameras being hamstrung by the limitations of old cameras, all in the name of nostalgia and cool factor.

Excellent review, thanks for posting. My takeaways from it:

Positives:
Good image quality
Accurate AF

Negatives:
Poor film advance action - feels like it is ripping the film.
Poor film rewinding action.
Poor distorted unclear viewfinder.

The haptics are really important to me as that is what makes a camera enjoyable to use, and why I would use it. I already have lots of cameras that can create excellent images. The ones that I use are those that are fun/pleasant to use.
So it’s a no from me.

Yeah, it seems like 2024 gave us two new film cameras: poor experience-great output (Rollei 35AF), lovely experience - half frame output (Pentax 17). If the P17 was full frame I would be considering it right now.

Yeah it makes less and less sense now that the P17 is half frame. Especially since labs charge a lot more to scan it. There never was a clamor for a new, expensive half frame camera. I’d like the P17 much more if it was a P34..
But that review does make me think if I was going to buy either the Rollei or the Pentax, I’d pick the Pentax.

In the mean time I’ll use my Ricoh FF1 which is zone focus, AE with manual override if you use the hot shoe hack, tiny, single stroke lever wind.

Ribsy replied in his full Rollei Af review and said the film advance was not good.

Now we have a view through the finder, know it's .05 and has frame lines. It would have been more informative if he mentioned using the advance lever but when he was using it in the video, it did't seem to be binding and there was no mention of any noise or dragging. It was almost painful to watch him rewinding the film. Is it a struggle? The all plastic rewind on my $27 Reto is easy to use, even with the little stub of a rewind crank and rewinds the film quickly. At least we get to see what it's like to load the camera while out and about. Thanks for posting!

I really hope this works out for Mint and the camera is solid/reliable.
It’s just not for me at this time.

Cautiously optimistic. I think the focusing noise is more of a deal-breaker for me... But need to see some more reviews.

I will say that I'm used to the old 35S haptics. The winding action on my copy is buttery smooth - so I'll be disappointed if this one isn't at least similar and needs to be broken in.

That said, I am really hit or miss with the scale focusing.

The dude sounds overly harsh considering the critics he points out.
Kai seemed more nuanced for once, he didn’t break it, that’s a good sign on his part.
To be fair, all the compacts I had were quite noisy if auto-focus was involved.
I hope they do well and/or can improve on that product, the black one is magnificient.
I wouldn’t mind a date stamp option, how else will I know when I took the photo.

Watched this last night, still too little info of the AF and lens IMO.
Compare his Pentax 17 review, this one looks like shill lol
Rollei 35AF vs Pentax 17 , if I have to get one it must be Pentax.

I am surprised Kai didn't break it given his past, and seeing the other videos first showing the reviewers struggling to open and close it.

The autofocus being loud surprised me because there were some 80s era point and shoots like the more primitive Minolta AF-C and HiMatic AF2 a pretty quiet AF motor on them.

It doesn’t look polished enough maybe, it’s a few dudes operation, it’s still impressive. The final product still is appealing considering, regarding the noise, if it’s not sign of fragility, I can be ok with that. The key for such a high end point and shoot released today would be durability over perfection. Perfection would be an analog-like sleek red date stamp option.
