The 50mm focal length is a bit too tight for my every day carry... 35/40mm is the sweet spot for me. Thanks!
Yeah, I failed remedial reading, last week.
The Yashica T4 camera is from 1990, and so my Tessar 50's are older, with probably slightly lower contrast (yet still, high) and somewhat less-effective coatings. Differences will be small, but there. The SMC Pentax K are also earlier (mid-70's). In the 90's Pentax was making the -FA autofocus series.
Anyway, I think you could consider the Zeiss Jena Flektogon auto 35/2.4 white MC CZJD M42-mount (1984), which is plenty Zeissie and plenty sharp; one of the few Jena lenses that was accepted as decent by the lenseratti, back in the day. Also, (but 1975) the Carl Zeiss Skoparex 35/3.4 M42, which plays well with the Carl Zeiss Ultron 50/1.8 M42. You'd probably like 50mm more, if you had an Ultron.
On LTM, my Canon S 35/2 II LTM (1962) is on my Canon 7 rangefinder, and it's loaded with something B&W (hope it's on the back). I haven't yet seen any B&W shot through it, yet (saving up for my first Cinestill DF96 experience). I expect it will have excellent sharpness and contrast, with somewhat different bokeh, than the Tessar.
I can echo the nice comments for the SMCP 28/3.5, SMCP 35/3.5 (have both). If you're interested in wider, the SMC Pentax 28mm f/2 PK (1972) is one of the best; it's a joint Zeiss Contax and Pentax venture, and it shows in both IQ and price. Also, it's not small (for its day), but can't be beat for IQ and Zeiss whatever (many fine lenses in the Pentax K lineup are equally sharp, but a bit lower in saturation (more than Olymups OM) and not as warm as Contax C/Y and the SMCP 28/2).
