My Yashica T4 is practically dead now; the lens extends when I press the shutter button, but the camera won't take pictures or advance the film.

I am in search of a lens (M or C/Y mount) with a similar rendering to the Zeiss 35mm f/3.5 Tessar.

Although I'm not an experienced film shooter, after many years experimenting with cameras, this lens is the only one that has produced the black & white pictures I truly love—more vintage than modern look, featuring excellent tonal separation and high perceived sharpness (I'm trying to avoid using the term "micro-contrast" ).

Is the Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 Biogon-C a good alternative?

---
PS: I haven't ruled out a lens conversion job using my T4 as the donor camera. (If you know of anyone who can do it, I'd greatly appreciate your advice).

I can think of:

Zeiss G 35/2 Planar
Zeiss G 45/2 Planar
Zeiss C/Y 45/2.8 Tessar

All pretty compact, very Zeissy character, similar to 35/3.5 and from the film era.

If you're willing to spend less the Minolta MD 45 2,0 or 35 2,8 will give you plenty of the thing we must not use the word.

Very nice pics by the way.

I know of three Zeiss M42-mount versions of the Tessar 50mm f/3.5:

1Q Tessar red I-bar sv
Tessar paint sv
Tessar sv (sm)

I have the first. If you're also considering 50/2.8 versions of the Tessar, I know of 40 variants and have about a dozen of them.

I'd be happy to take a few example images for you (on digital), over the next couple of days.

I was tempted by the Contax G system, but I decided not to rely again on electronic cameras for my film photography... (before the Yashica T4, also my Konica Hexar AF died... now I have 2 mint cameras for display only

I will definitely try the Zeiss C/Y 45/2.8 Tessar... thanks!

Thank you!

The results from the Minolta MD 35mm 2.8 look amazing indeed, but I've already invested too much money into the M and C/Y mount systems

The 50mm focal length is a bit too tight for my every day carry... 35/40mm is the sweet spot for me. Thanks!

In the non-Zeiss world there are a few tiny, good and full manual lenses within 35-45mm fl as well, like:

Konica Hexanon AR 40/1.8
Minolta MD Rokkor 45/2
Olympus OM Zuiko 40/2 (pretty rare)
Minolta MD 35/2,8
SMC Pentax M 40/2.8
SMC Pentax M 35/2.8

There are also far more tiny 50mm and 28mm good vintage lenses.

The Pentax SMC 35mm f/3.5 K was my favorite, for some reason it saturates skies in a very addicting way. The only other lens that behaves similarly is the SMC 28mm f/3.5 K.

I'm a big fan of my C/Y Tessar 45mm f/2.8

The focal length is a bit tighter but it has the Tessar look. It matches well to my f/3.5 Rolleiflex which also has a Tessar type lens (Schneider Xenar). At the risk of sounding woo-woo-wah-wah, it's a very crisp lens with excellent inky blacks.

I mostly use it on my S2 which is fully mechanical, but there are plenty of good automated Contax bodies. The Aria is very light and compact, and has matrix metering as well.

Yeah, I failed remedial reading, last week.

The Yashica T4 camera is from 1990, and so my Tessar 50's are older, with probably slightly lower contrast (yet still, high) and somewhat less-effective coatings. Differences will be small, but there. The SMC Pentax K are also earlier (mid-70's). In the 90's Pentax was making the -FA autofocus series.

Anyway, I think you could consider the Zeiss Jena Flektogon auto 35/2.4 white MC CZJD M42-mount (1984), which is plenty Zeissie and plenty sharp; one of the few Jena lenses that was accepted as decent by the lenseratti, back in the day. Also, (but 1975) the Carl Zeiss Skoparex 35/3.4 M42, which plays well with the Carl Zeiss Ultron 50/1.8 M42. You'd probably like 50mm more, if you had an Ultron.

On LTM, my Canon S 35/2 II LTM (1962) is on my Canon 7 rangefinder, and it's loaded with something B&W (hope it's on the back). I haven't yet seen any B&W shot through it, yet (saving up for my first Cinestill DF96 experience). I expect it will have excellent sharpness and contrast, with somewhat different bokeh, than the Tessar.

I can echo the nice comments for the SMCP 28/3.5, SMCP 35/3.5 (have both). If you're interested in wider, the SMC Pentax 28mm f/2 PK (1972) is one of the best; it's a joint Zeiss Contax and Pentax venture, and it shows in both IQ and price. Also, it's not small (for its day), but can't be beat for IQ and Zeiss whatever (many fine lenses in the Pentax K lineup are equally sharp, but a bit lower in saturation (more than Olymups OM) and not as warm as Contax C/Y and the SMCP 28/2).

It would definitely be my first choice of lenses if only I had bought a Pentax MX when I had the opportunity long time ago... Then I bought my first Contax camera (139q) and now I'm trying to complete my full set of C/Y lenses.

I had a Konica T3 with the 50mm f/1.7 and 28mm 3.5... Tried the 40mm 1.8, very nice rendering, but the viewfinder of the Konicas (still have the T and A3) was a big let down for me.

Wow, I just red an old post of a Flektogon mounted on a Contax 139q (Link)... I'm trying to figure out if the M42/CY adapter allows automated apertures or if it needs to stop-down...
Thank you!

The T45/2.8 is on the to-buy list for my S2. A wider symmetric lens is not usable on SLR due to mount registration, hence the Distagons that are available for C/Y mount. The classic Tessar and upscale Sonnar are available on various film P&S (mine are attached to the Contax T and T3). I guess they have a more classic look than the D35 models, but the latter are more flexible, being attachable to anything. Another option at a truly premium price is the digital Sony RX1 family with its 35/2. That lens is really something rendition-wise, although calling it a Sonnar is strictly marketing.
