Why do some members even bother to click on these obvious scam threads

I usually do also when they first appear. Not sure about the other 25-30 views.

Fred probably knows about them quickly now as they have been a problem for several weeks.

What drives scammers to disperse this kind of "ads" around the forums is beyond me (I've seen it happen on all three forums I now frequent, two of them photographic and one dedicated to game modding). I mean, it can hardly be efficient for attracting customer base... can it?

Efficiency is not relevant. The scammers are hitting pirated lists of sites and email addresses, with black-hat apps. It probably took more time and energy for me to type this reply, than it does for a scammer to fire up a scambot that hits millions of sites and addresses.

The number of views that a spam post gets is also not relevant. The number of clicks on links from within the spam-post is the only thing that counts - for the spammer.

Thanks, Jim. Maybe I'm just not that versed in all that newfangled stuff. I mean... advertising callgirls in whatever that Middle Eastern city was on a forum where the majority of the userbase is from the US anyway? It was more of a cause for laugh than nuisance, frankly.

I would think that by now Fred has automated things enough to at least track the number of reports received on a particular post within a short period of time and automatically suspend it reliving him (or anyone else) from the need to be on the job 24/7.

Having said that, I see no reason to reply to the offending post at all, just click the REPORT button, type “Scam” if asked for a reason, submit it and then move on. I feel that the more reports submitted on the offending post the faster it will be removed.

1. Scammers flood the world with this stuff, and it only takes a very tiny percentage of readers to respond for them to make some money. Sometimes just getting you to click a link out of curiosity is enough to do some potential damage.

2. I wonder if Fred would consider giving a few long-time FM'ers the ability to jump in and delete these threads. Might get it done even faster. Just a thought, so no issues if he doesn't like the idea.

3. If you do click into one of those posts... if you are the first person to do so, report it using the report link and then post a one-word "reported" message so that others know that they don't need to.

4. As per above, if you know it is spam without clicking, don't go there. One theory is that a bunch of clicks on the post will raise its visibility in search engines, and you don't want to contribute to that. Definitely don't add more comments to the thread, as that also increases its reach.

This is what we do on another photography-related site where I am an admin. We have a small group of users who act to moderate the forums, among other things. Works well.

When I report them, I do also make a single two-word reply "spam reported" to save everyone else the trouble. Such a thread will have its obvious spam title, a post count of 2, and the most recent post from a member’s name you recognise. I see a couple of other participants in this thread doing the same (I copied them). I hadn’t thought of it as a voting process, and the threads do seem to have disappeared if I check back later (which I don’t consistently do).

I didn’t know there were scammers here, my encounters with scammers has been on eBay.
I got scammed around 3yrs ago to the tune of £2.7K!!! The most upsetting thing was both eBay and PayPal wouldn’t believe me!! The scammer was sending laughing emoji’s I kept raising the issue with eBay and PayPal. The scammer finally slipped up when he forged a letter from Royal Mail using Royal Mail letter head and a long since gone depot manager’s signature, Royal Mail instantly took action and contacted Police Fraud, it was all then proven I was telling the truth and was refunded my £2.7K, took 6wks throughout which no one believed me.

Scammers - I HATE the bastards (sorry) I wish they would just die….painfully!! (again sorry)

Both me and my partner never ever answer the house phone these days, never answer mobile calls unless we recognise the caller, never open unsolicited mail, never take part in surveys either in public or online etc etc

Determined not to give the scrounging parasites an inch - absolutely despise them, they are little more than sewer rats, just vile !!
