Hi All

I've been trying to find a carry on bag for my RF 400 2.8. My Thinktank Airport Advantage is OK for length but the pull-out handles mean that it is not deep enough to get that massively wide lens hood in.

Has anyone tried the Thinktank Airport Commuter or the Airport Accelerator with this lens, the official inside depth of these is 17cm and the 400 hood is 18cm?

How do the amazing photographers here manage this?

Somehow I've also got to have room for a body, x1.4 and x2 a few more bits and keep the overall size down!

Any first hand knowledge on this would be very greatly received,

BB

For a carryon backpack I travel with Gura Gear Kiboko 2.0 22L. I use it with my Z9/Z8, 400mm 2.8TC, 70-200mm 2.8 and other stuff. For my carry roller I use the Think Tank Airport Advantage XT.

I had the same issue and I just picked up the larger Atlas Adventure pack. I've been using their smaller Athlete pack for a few years and have been happy with it. Haven't used the Adventure yet other than trying my 400 in it, and it fits.

I have the RF400 with its original hood and the Zemlin short hood and couldn’t fit it in my Gura Gear 22L with either hood. I believe the RF400 is slightly larger than the Nikon 400Z in the picture. As slight as the size difference is there was no way I could close the 22L with the hood attached.

I ended up picking up the Gura 30L backpack which lets me pack the RF400 with either hood on one side of the bag. It will also let me pack the 400 with the R3 attached. Though right now I have the RF400 on one side with both the RF1.4x and 2.0x TCs stored in their own dividers at the top. Keep the R3 and a second body plus a couple of lenses on the other.

That's the RF400 on the right in that photo? It fits pretty nicely. I might rethink my decision...

Thanks for sharing! I'll get some shots of my Atlas with a similar setup when I have a chance.

Actually the RF 400mm 2.8L is shorter by almost 1/2 inch. I had the RF 400mm before and I was able to fit it in the 22L bag just like I do the Z 400mm 2.8TC. However it was a tighter fit due to it being a little wider than the Nikon.

I can confirm the Guragear 30L fits the rf 400 2.8 with good and attached body if you want, but it think only the standard version, the 30L+ version is more shallow. It will likely not allow the canon hood to fit

Yes, it’s the RF400 on the right with both RF teleconverters at the top. Instead of the teleconverters, the RF400 with a body attached will also fit on one side. I’m thinking though not 100% sure the RF400 with a body AND the RF1.4x attached would also fit on one side. I’ll have to test it out to be sure.

The Gura Gear backpacks are lightweight but tough and well built.

I fly with this lens with the Airport International and it fits well. Usually I have the R3, R5, and 100-500 along for the ride.

Thanks so much for your suggestions everyone.

Sadly the Gura Gear bags don’t seem to be available in the UK.
Just my luck as that that seems to be the best option.

I now live far away from my favourite camera stores in London but I managed on the phone to persuade one very helpful guy at Fixation [London] to get one of his ‘loner’ 400s and try it in a TT Airport commuter backpack to see if it would fit.

Just as expected it did stick up a bit above the zip line but he said that he was able to zip the lid down OK without any struggle.

So I’ve managed to persuade my local store to get one in for me to try out and see with my own eyes before making a decision!

Thanks again for your help and I’ll let you know what I decide once I’ve had a chance to try out the TT Commuter for myself,

You could also look at F-stop Ajna bag with XL ICU. That fits 400/2.8 lenses no problem if camera isn't attached. My Sony A1 with 400/2.8 attached also fits but I think the RF400 may be longer. It may or may not but would certainly have enough room for lens and bodies if not attached (which is probably safer when flying anyways).

I don't have a photo handy of the 400 in the XL ICU but this photo is the 600/4 which is about the same length as the 400 with body attached.

If you can find a source for GuraGear these photos show the 400/2.8 and 600/4 in the discontinued Bataflae 32L which will be similar to the current Kiboko 30L.
