Yes small leg spread is an issue with the Leofoto's. I have a super compact travel tripod from them, for when I absolutely need a tripod but weight is important, and out a grinder to the leg tabs to increase the stability.
Which 4 section tripod did you go with?

I have the LS-323C, as I also shared the same view with the other poster, that it has a long collapsed length, which I find very frustrating to travel with. The legs have narrow open to make it higher when fully expanded at the cost of stiffness, in open field with wind, you will see the camera view shake a lot, as it could not damp the force well. So I switch to 4-section tripods, and the LS-323C stays at home to mount camera for music recording.
Please be excuse for my rusty English.
