p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canada geese, some with creative blur

This was my first outing since getting sick and I traveled light with my 70-300mm, 1.4x TC and even left the battery grip home. My goal for the outing was to find the great horned owl's nest which should be near the one I followed last spring. I found the male high in a tree and obscured by twigs so I'm not going to share his photos. He should be someplace where he can watch the nest and defend it if necessary. I did not find the nest and I'm assuming the female is sitting on the eggs in a tree hollow. she may not be visible. While I was photographing the owl, a huge flock of migratory Canada Geese came in and landed on the lake. I walked over and took some photos of them and the ducks. One nice surprise was the rerun of red winged black birds, the first of the summer birds to arrive here in New York City.

Comments and suggestions welcome,

Morris

Thanks for the documentation Morris. I like the wing blur. Excellent photography skills.

Winter is over here..... a month early. A few Starlings began stopping at my feeder last few days and I expect Grackles/RWBB to soon follow.

I've reached the point that I do not care what climate change deniers espouse. 2023 was the hottest ever recorded by far.

Interesting to see if you learn more about that owl.

Good to see you back out Morris, that light outfit served you well.

#2 is pure pandemonium and shows the frenzy of the flock mentality, all taking off. Wicked fun pic!

Probably useless commentary: I'm with Ted and like 5 also, but I'm torn if I'd crop differently in keeping the trailing group out of the shot or not. I know cropping would mess up the composition, so maybe cloning them out... I dunno, it works as-is also and hints that there were more geese present. Was curious if you struggled with the decision. Either way, nice work.

Thank you Bob,

There is no question that it's getting warmer and also that the rate of warming is increasing. The bigger question is will humans slow the rate of change?

Thank you Eric,

Long ago I realized that simply removing things from the edge can change the message. In this case I leave the trailing birds cropped as it tells the story of more birds outside of the frame. If one is showing a single bird or small group for an art image, then cleaning the edge makes sense yet I want to tell the whole story in that image.
