Hi folks,

From your experience with the R5 + 100-500L + 1.4x combo, do you get better, sharper BIF images when you shoot in 1:6 Crop Mode or in Full mode?

Why do you think that is?

Thanks very much
Rudy

I have no practical experience with that particular kit, so take this with a grain of salt.

However... it should not be possible to observe differences between an image cropped in camera and one cropped in post, assuming identical shooting conditions. If someone could reliably demonstrate otherwise, I would be very, very surprised.

IMO, crop mode is useful to support EF-S and RF-S lenses, and maybe for in-camera JPEGs, but for those shooting RAW I can't imagine what benefit it conveys, other than the convenience of a zoomed in viewfinder display.

A thing to bear in mind is that any image you shoot while in "crop mode" that is not actually reach-limited (as in, you zoomed to a shorter focal length to capture a closer subject) is now forever compromised by having 60% less resolution than you would otherwise have captured using the whole sensor.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that the camera has an easier time with focus for distant not so contrasty things in 1.6x crop mode. Friend of mine has been fooling with focus distant sub in crop, hit a button, and shoot in FF RAW. Me, I'm not that ambidextrous.

Using which AF mode? I could see a scenario where if you just let the camera use all of the AF points that might make sense because you're removing a bunch of points to check in crop mode. If you're using Single point AF in both modes I think it would be odd for there to be a difference.

R5 certainly showed a consistent tendency that it will activate Bird Eye-AF in crop mode when it wasn't "seeing" the eye in full frame mode immediately before switching over (when the bird was relatively small in the frame in full frame mode).

I could never prove to myself if this translated into better AF for BIF but if the bird is far away it may be better to try shooting in crop mode as AF may be better. However the benefit of shooting in full frame mode for BIF is it is easier to keep the bird in the frame so you have to weigh that against the possible better AF in crop mode (if there really is a difference).

I will say that when I owned R5/100-500/1.4TC I was never all that happy with the 1.4TC results when shooting BIF. I was much happier using the bare lens and cropping as needed. If you are needing 700mm and crop mode for an equivalent 1050mm FOV to get the bird large enough in the frame then IME the bird is too far for a good shot 95% of the time anyways.

@arbitrage did you see the OP's other post about soft images with the 100-500 & 1.4x TC. ls his sample image worse than what you got with that combo?

OP has asked the same question on DPP, without much input from others.

That thread shows possible effects of atmospheric distortion and perhaps some came shake.

I never use crop mode. I prefer to crop in post where I have more control of everything. I use the 1.4 TC as well and crop if I can but it gets limited. This is an interesting video. Off tropic a bit but interesting.

Hi folks,

Thanks for all the feedback. As most of you have seen I also bean another thread called "Why is this image soft?" because I basically had two different questions but apparently with some overlap.

Anyways, we can probably let this thread retire now as the problem with my soft images doesn't seem to be related with whether I'm shooting in crop mode or full mode.

I quite regularly shoot R5 - 100-400II or Sig C 150-600 + 1.4III + crop mode when the light is good .

If the targets are close and I am not using 1.4 or crop mode I get the same results.

This an example of what I get regularly with eye tracking shooting bursts, and all files are sharp, this was with R5 100-400II + 1.4III + crop mode

I only use single point for Bird on a Stick in dense foliage. Occasionally zone. Normally in ServoAF with face tracking and subject animals.

When I got my R I tried the robamy thing. 100-400 II, 2X and crop mode. It was too hard for me to hand hold for even static subjects.

Rudy,
I never shoot stills in crop mode for BIF, as I find it harder to track and more chance of clipping wings so I want the extra room around my subject. I have heard other say that combo focuses better in crop mode for BIF, but I don't experience the focus problem as much as the other problems I mentioned.
Good Luck,
Dave
