I've been photographing tiny parts of my hometown, Monterey, Ca. over the last several years and this beautiful bit of rusted iron which is likely from the mid 1830's, as is most of old downtown Monterey, is very near the center of town on Polk Street, and people walk by all day long every day and never see this, yet here it is in all its rusted glory.

This one was with the Canon 135mm t/s-e which is perfectly suited for this kind of work. Several people stopped to chat as I spent about an hour here and while I didn't know any one of them directly, at least one knew people I went to high school with have a century ago.

This is beautiful Peter! Very detailed with great texture!
I have many old military forts around me with "hardware" that dates to pre Revolutionary times. Major Geo Washington was still in the British army then!
Again very well done!
Dan

Yes. The rust lives on, and I really like the sort of random placement of all those old nails and the aged, rotted patina of the wood.

Beautiful shots, love Monterey and its rich history. This might be detail that no one cares about but me. That is most likely wrought iron which basically means a blacksmith beat it into shape using partially melted pig iron. The process of beating it into shape also reduces carbon content of the iron which raises the corrosion resistance over cast iron. That's why its still there in a salt air environment near the ocean. Its interesting to consider where the base iron came from as I doubt there was an iron foundry in CA at that time. Probably from Mexico via San Diego on a wagon then on a ship to Monterey.
