I love my 50/2.5 Skopar LTM but my new 28/2.8 Skopar is like half the weight. So the 50/2.2 + 28/2.8 might be just as many grams as a single brass lens.

I recently sold my 50/2.5 in anticipation of the 2.2.
That extra 0.3 f-stop will make a world of difference to my sunny f16 photography.

Indeed, the 28/2.8 Skopar is fantastic, and I also think about adding this 50/2.2 for the same reason... CV is really offering interesting lenses!

Any chance for the new CV 50/2.2 coming in brass/black paint version as well?

I don't know but I think it would probably not happen at launch at least. I wouldn't be totally surprised if there was a silver version in addition to the regular black one though since Cosina had a silver version on display at CP+ even though they only pre-announced the regular black one. Very cool Juha! I somehow missed your picture showing a 'silver' version. I think it's possible that Cosina will offer a black paint version, but as you mentioned, it's unlikely.

By the way, the 50/2.2 design was changed a bit from the time of pre-announcement at CP+. The lens became 15g lighter (150g at CP+ to 135g for release version). The color of the black lens changed at the lowermost part from black to silver as well.

It is unfortunate that the color of the black model was changed. It seems like the unity of color has been lost.

They mentioned about the color change on the new product introduction video. If I got it right, the motivation behind the change was that the change improved how the black lens looks on silver bodies (the modified design is supposed to look good on both black and silver bodies now) and they also mentioned that it makes the lens look even more compact.

They also talked about how the base of the optical design is Sonnar type but they combined it with certain characteristics from Gauss type into some kind of optimal combination. That was interesting.

Were they influenced by the black body 35mm summilux steel rim reissue ( the expensive unobtainable special edition ) ?

Roughly $400 is better than I was hoping for. Not sure I agree with the silver added to the black version, I’ll definitely be trying out the silver

Based on its optical design, this lens could have an interesting rendering. There are no aspherical elements!

Wow, it went from 150g to 135g. This lens is approaching the size and compactness of MS Optics lenses while still being presumably a high-performing lens.

That vignetting is extremely high. I hope that was added in post.

Yes, they mention that the silver base on the black version would make the lens appear even more compact when attached to the body. I found the combination of Sonnar and Planar designs without the addition of asphericals very interesting as well. I can't wait to see how it performs in terms of resolution and rendering. The sample images don't reveal much, although the lens seems well-corrected for chromatic aberration, and Cosina mentions it has strong flare resistance.

It might be the YouTube translation at fault, but near the end of the video where he talks about adapting the lens to other mirrorless cameras, it sounds like he says this lens is designed to focus past infinity. I'm hoping he was actually talking about the adapter allow this rather than the lens.

Yeah, he didn't actually say it will focus past infinity. They seem to use the same description on their other VM lens product pages too (for lenses that definitely don't focus past infinity).

Auto-translation:
The optical design is optimized for use with rangefinder-coupled digital and film cameras, but it also assumes shooting with mirrorless digital cameras by using a mount adapter, and is compatible with shooting on various platforms beyond the scope of rangefinder-coupled cameras.

Low vignetting does not seem to be a priority for Cosina, which is understandable given the size of this lens. There's zero chance they added vignetting to the sample images on purpose!

But from those images it seems crazy high.

Cool to see how they kept the concept of the old 50/2.5 and tweaked it a bit. It’s not exactly the same, but this is clearly a revision of that optical design.

The silver base is an interesting choice. But this is a company that makes (relatively) audacious (and interesting) choices all the time.
