I thought this was a pretty marginal upgrade and there are even some downgrades (e.g. 4k video quality) but I thought it was worth pre-ordering after using the X100V on and off and selling mine a couple of months ago.

I've tried all the different large sensor fixed compact cameras on the market and I still think the X100 series is the best balance between size, image quality, and capabilities. Leica Q3 and Ricoh GR III are close but have their own issues. I also think the 40mp sensor on the XT-5 delivers better output than the 26 mp sensor on the X100V especially when post-processing with DXO PureRaw so hoping for some improvements there too.

If I had a X100V on hand though right now, I probably wouldn't upgrade and be happy with it. Also, If I didn't care about size, I think the XT-5, XS-20, or Nikon ZF would be preferable on my list right now.

About time, but at bit lazy update IMO. They could have updated the EVF, screen, mic port to 3.5 and class II SD card. Regardless, it will sell like hotcakes.

This is (in part) why I avoid social media. So much rage bait and algorithm content. It's tiring and it's sad.

... and found a way to incorporate the newer battery that is standard in their newer high-end cameras.

(I recently got 970 frames out of one battery in myXT5 while photographing mostly birds... and the battery indicator still showed one bar. Never got remotely close to that with the old battery. A third of that was more typical and sometimes worse.)

Maybe in the XTvii? ;-)

Oh yes, same battery as the XT5 would have been a no-brainer.

The raised the price and moved production to China, one think they could have squeezed it in.

Jonas review is superb because he's like... a great photographer. That dude could sell me on anything, lol. I'm interested in this thing for sure. The fact that it'll likely be backordered will help me with the GAS 😅

Every review gallery is basically a mini portfolio. I think he's in the running as one of the top street shooters of our generation but everyone sleeps on him.

Jonas Rask could walk down the street drunk wearing nothing but a bathrobe and carrying an Xpan and create gold.

I think it's important to realize they kept almost exactly the same size and kept battery life roughly the same while adding 6-stop IBIS into an already very compact body. That alone likely removed any chance of squeezing in anything else without substantially altering the size or design.

For me, this really takes the camera and makes it essentially perfect for what it is. Would I like 1500 shot battery life and a viewfinder with 0.9x magnification? Yeah, but that's not realistic to fit in a camera of this form factor. Even the A7C II has only a very slightly larger EVF, and it doesn't have the optical finder at all.

So, taking the X100V, which was an incredible little camera, and adding IBIS and better AF is really all that was needed, IMO.

It's a great feat Fuji kept the camera dimensions exactly the same while including IBIS to the new X100VI. Although the weight of the camera increased by ~10% (43g heavier)

I'm very very happy the backseat internet engineers don't work at Fuji. Sticking with the original battery in this total package was the play in the overall big scheme of keeping the "X100 dna".

If they were going to run a bigger battery, then it's time for an upgraded EVF, bigger IBIS unit, UHS-II for higher video bitrates, etc...and that's a totally different camera (and one Fuji already makes many versions of).

Meh... I find this release to be a little bit lackluster. I've shot Fuji for a long time, and this is another example of them squeezing in a bunch of video specs to tick boxes for mouth-breathing reviewers, instead of focusing that attention on their actual end-user, which, for the X100-series, is primarily photographers, not videographers.

I'd much rather see Fuji stop their pandering to tech giants and use that R&D time to develop a full frame sensor, better manual focus experience, or a faster lens for the X100-series. Video is a nice plus, but for those that value the

So true- I also am laughing at some of the no one wants video or they should make it full frame-

For 1600 bucks in a weather sealed (with stupid ring) package, this thing is killer. Can't wait for mine to show up next week.

Just really? How hard is it to put a second battery in your pocket? All this whining about battery life is ridiculous.

I never said no one wants video. I said that while the video is a nice plus, there are other things I think they could have included instead of focusing on the video aspect for a camera that is very clearly designed for stills photography, and that is used primarily for such work.

I'm not saying it can't or won't be used for video, but I would venture to guess the majority of folks using an X100-series camera, aren't as interested in a hybrid camera as they would be in a full frame sensor or f/1.4 lens or something like that.

The Fuji X-Mount lineup was dinged pretty hard by tech reviewers in their earlier years for not having AF and Video specs on-par with other cameras from Sony, Nikon and Canon, and have worked to incorporate those features into their cameras over the years, but at the risk of all-but-abandoning the svelte, retro-inspired stills-photo-centric cameras they started out to make (namely, the X-Pro-, X100-, and XT-lines). They've gotten back to that a little bit with the XT5, leaving the XH-line to be their more video-centric/hybrid flagships, but I'd have liked to have seen a bigger update to the X100VI considering it's been 4+ years since the X100V was launched.

I still stand by my thought that this is very much an evolutionary update and not a revolutionary one. And they really could have done something revolutionary here...

So you want Fuji- who has stated over and over they are not entering the FF market and abadndon the design to its most popular camera line that is known for its haptics, small form factor and RF/film like shooting experience.

To create a FF camera, with a massive 1.4 lens so it can be a revolutionary step? I already own this camera and it has a red badge and a 1.7 lens attached to it.

Also that your best guess is no one wants this to be able to perform as a hybrid camera?

Not agreeing with you logic here man. This thing is going to sell even faster than the old one did-

I don't think they focused on video at all - the 40mp sensor has worse characteristics for video due to worse rolling shutter. The video features are a throw-in from the XT-5/XH-2 development. I actually would've wanted them to do better on the video capabilities - e.g. full sensor read out vs cropped.

Honestly- I didn't notice either to scratch all that much-

I would buy based on more discrete camera on your shoulder or a bit louder-

Both hold up just fine IMO

IBIS is fine, but that's about the only notable improvement over the X100V. The extra megapixels are useful for some folks, I guess, but the existing sensor in the X100V is still a very, very good sensor.

Many of the updates Fuji has made to other cameras in the last 4 years were introduced into this model.

I'm not sure how the camera can be improved more without sacrificing size and form factor -- an f1.4 lens would be great, but would probably be bigger than what Fuji is willing to incorporate for this line.

Basically all of the features that people asked for -- new sensor, more megapixels, IBIS and better AF - were included.

You also have to remember that 2 years of the last 4 were essentially lost to the pandemic, and Fuji is not in the business of full frame sensors. Its whole thing with the X-series is to carve out a niche for a high quality APS-C system.
