Thinking out loud, I wonder if sales on B+S follow a common trend for all new camera models as they progress through their life cycle. Very few sales right after introduction, then a large, short-term increase in listings from early adopters / techies / tire kickers selling their body after satisfying their curiosity, then after that period is over, a slow trending up in listings corresponding to increasing sales / ownership of the body over its lifetime, then another large increase in sales as it approaches the expected introduction of the next revision of the model.

you are simply late to the party. there are months involved. i generally don't look at this stuff.

To that point, this is my favorite kind of party. Now can I talk myself into the Z8 being worth the $1300 upgrade cost over a Z7II?

I found out what I needed. I was looking at a used Z8. I was a little startled that, IMHO, there had been a lot of them sold here in the past several months. More than I would have thought. My opinion.

I have a huge investment in Nikkor gold ring lenses for my D850 and will just stick with it. Plus I have a second D850 body. One has 390000+ clicks, the other one is my spare at less than 4000.

It was, in my opinion, just a simple question. Let's not devolve into 10+ pages of madness.

I'm OK being neurotic.

Flip side: many F lenses work better on the Z8/Z9 than they ever did on the D850. Food for thought, if being neurotic is your jam

Completely agree with this. The newer Z lenses are outstanding, but those older lenses work even better on the Z8/Z9 than they do on the DSLRs. Not only that, they z8 offers many many more features that the d850 will never be able to do. An advantage (albeit small) is that all your D850 batteries will work as well. I wouldn't look at the used market as a detriment. You have the opportunity to pick up a Z8 for under 3k if you keep an eye out and get a massive upgrade to your system.

So what did you conclude? Will you be buying a Z8 at bargain price?

This is exactly right. I have my D850, my Z8 and only F-mount glass. My lenses work better in the Z8 than they did with the D850.

Was considering a move from my D850 to a Z8. Noticed MANY for sale used with low shutter counts. Would be curious to know what's going on/wrong with the Z8?

Thanks.

There is nothing wrong with the Z8 at all.

You are overanalyzing.

My D850 was my #1 since it came out and up until I bought the Z8. I do not bother with my D850 now.... and I still only have f-mount glass.

The Z8 with the FTZ is basically the best F mount camera ever made, unless you want the Z9 form factor.

I would not be concerned about how many you might find for sale used. People have all diffrent reasons for selling gear. If it would give you more peace of mind try to find why people are selling there Z8. For example I have read people saying they are selling there Z8 because they prefer the form factor of the Z9. But I have also seen people say they are selling a Z9 because they prefer the form factor of a Z8. In either of those cases it's just all down to user preference, not that either camera is bad.

Probably. Was a little surprised at the news that newer F glass performs better than the S series lenses.

Will need a vertical grip for larger battery use if available.

I see these threads but if you are looking for a Z8 it doesn't really matter what everyone else is doing. I'm sure it's an excellent camera, if you want or need one great time to get one

I don't pay much attention to flipping. Photographers are fickle and like to change gear. We're always on the lookout for something better.

As an example, when I searched FS to see how many times the Loxia 21/2.8 changed hands, the results were mind blowing -- based on how many times people flipped it one could get the wrong impression that it's an inherently bad lens and that everyone who buys one immediately gets rid of it.

That's not really correct. F glass performs better on the Z bodies than on the dslr bodies though.

I think you may have misunderstood. The point being made is that F mount lenses on a Z mount body outperform F mount lenses on an F mount body. Not that F mount lenses outperform Z mount lenses.

Another variable to consider - the more popular a particular camera or product is, the more there will naturally be on the used market. A certain percentage of them will always be for sale, so the larger the overall product pool is, the more you will see on the used market at any given time. You never know people's motivation for sale, it could be anything from financial hardship to changing hobbies or an unlimited number of other reasons. Looking at data in isolation, especially on an enthusiast forum, is never going to give an accurate representation of the broader market.

Yet another variable - the Z8 is basically the same camera as a Z9 from a performance standpoint. Because of that, it's a very popular backup or secondary camera. Backup cameras get sold more often than primary cameras, especially if they are just purchased for a particular trip or job and are no longer needed after.

Take the iPhone for example - I think most would agree those are very popular and generally well liked. In my area alone there is what seems like an unlimited number iPhones, no more than 1-2 years old, for sale at any given time. Nobody shopping for one is wondering why there are so many to choose from and it's unlikely that a high percentage of those folks selling are jumping ship to another brand.

The last thread we had on this was what, 7 or 8 pages long, all to come to the conclusion that Z8 sale prices were right in line, if not higher than other similar models on the used market relative to their MSRP. All we've learned is that with cherry picked data you can push any narrative you want If you want a Z8, just buy a Z8. If anything was wrong with it we would know by now. If there are lots for sale, great, maybe you can get a slightly better price.
