Was considering a move from my D850 to a Z8. Noticed MANY for sale used with low shutter counts. Would be curious to know what's going on/wrong with the Z8?

Quick synopsis is that there doesn't seem to be much difference between the Z8 and other cameras on the market. I personally wouldn't be worried anymore now that the initial teething issues seem to be sorted and the firmware is in a great place.

I've been buying and selling gear online for a long time and there's always a lot of new adopters when a new product comes to market that end up selling and moving on, regretting an impulse buy, got some stock they are trying to offload, made multiple orders and missed the return window etc.

Yeah and that's my point. Search for "fs z8" and you get about 6-8 current listings of which 1 is used and actively seeking a buyer.

over the past months there were a fair amount that changed hands. there are those that indecision takes precedence.

by reading what i suggested would possibly give an idea of what goes on.

I counted 38 on the first page alone, not counting the 7-8 "withdrawn"... ,and 5 on that page are still for sale, so where did you only find 1

search for "fs z8" which will show you the items "for sale" with "z8" in them. The sold, withdrawn, wanted to buy "wtb" dont represent active for sale items, which was the genesis of this thread.

OK, for the widget counters... the Z8 released in late Q2/Early Q3 2023, but actually hit the shelves mid Q3 2023. It is Q1 2024. I'm looking at all Z8's listed here for sale/sold/whatever. That is a lot of new bodies for sale, and I'm wondering why.

Guess I wasn't clear enough.

OMG, yes, that thread is toxic.

I'll be sticking with my D850. I held out for the Z8 because I'm a landscape/storm photographer and didn't want to change lenses on a camera body with an uncovered sensor, which until the Z8 only the Z9 had at a Z9 price.

We talked endlessly about the prices of used Z8 in B&S in this thread https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1843530, so let's talk about why there are so many selling for the next 10 pages.

The fact is - it is a conspiracy. Don't buy one - you may end up with too many Nikon Z mount lenses as a result.

So we're neurotic for reading a question at face value. Words still have meaning, at least I hope they still do. I doubt it quite a lot nowadays.

Now that we've properly setup the straw man argument to happen, does the z8 have more bst activity than brand/model x? Even if it does, is this a measure of market activity indicating a high interest level of a popular product or is it something else?

A wildly unclear OP, 1 linked toxic thread, a gross misinterpretation of the B/S/T forum, and whatever THIS is...and 30 min later completed dissuaded to buy a Z8. Ok...

You have a good camera. The Z8 is a good camera. You buy into lenses, not cameras. If you're interested in upgrading to a camera of similar quality and a set of Z lenses to mount them to, well, you have 2 options and the Z8 is half of them.

I made the comment in the prices thread about the price of Z8s holding up better than the A7RV which was released around the same time, in the same price range, and widely seen as the direct competitor of the Z8. The same holds true here. Do a search in the B&S forum for A7rV and you will see bundles of them for sale. 3 actively for sale at the moment for as low as $2750. I also don't know that the B&S forum is a great measure of the larger market though. For example, MPB only has 1 for sale. They have 67 Z6s for sale. People are certainly dumping the Z6/Z6ii/Z7/Z7ii cameras.
As far as the B&S here being a kind of unique economics, I'm certainly guilty of it, but there certainly seems to be a lot of gear going back and forth. I don't see this site as representative of the larger market. Personally, I consider it to be a cheaper alternative to renting. Buy used here from reputable seller when I know I'm going to need something or want to test it out. Use it for a while and know that I can sell for minimal or no loss. Rent a Z8 from lensrentals for a week and it's $221 a week.
