Even better was in that other lifetime when I worked for Ken's Cameras in Monterey somewhere around 1980 and Brett Weston would come in on a regular basis and I'd carry 50 lb. sacks of sodium thiosulfate out to his van and he'd show me everything in the van from 35mm through 11x14 cameras ready to go on a moment's notice. He was also the first Porsche 928 customer in the Monterey Peninsula as well and my very close and dear friend, Claudette Dibert was the subject of his underwater nude explorations, until her untimely demise in the fall of '82.

And maybe even better than that, one day Michael Nesmith came into the store and I sold him a lens. He wrote a check for it and when I saw the name on the check I asked him if he was THE Michael Nesmith and he said yes. No I.D. required. Later on, before I moved to L.A. to go to Art Center, I would shoot production stills for some of his videos including Juice Newton's Love's Been a Little Bit Hard On Me. I think very few people there had any idea that there was a full on video production facility right there in Sand City, right next to Monterey. Always my favorite Monkee even though Gee played accordion on a couple Dolenz CD's in the early 90's.

Looks like you are like me in regards to photography has been an amazing passport into other worlds we might not have never been in without it.

I got a chance to work with Micky at a fund rising event many years ago.

One of my favorite PCH stories is my X and I drove up from LA to Monterey and we stayed in Carmel overnight. The next day she went shopping and I stumbled into the Weston gallery there and sent hours looking at portfolios by Edward, Cole, Brett and Ansel Adams. Almost heaven.

Ah, yes. The Weston Gallery. What a place, and they have several "Moonrise" prints there as well. So different to see them in person. But did you ever get down the street to the Photography West Gallery owned by my old pal Carol Williams. She really put Brett Weston on the map when she opened that place with a show of his work. The behind the scenes stories I wish I could tell in public. Ha. They all interconnect, which is why we used to say "As The Peninsula Turns".

Just beautiful, Peter. Hmmm, I didn't even notice the "lines" until they were mentioned. Permit me a naive question: from what vantage point did you take the picture? Is there an "overlook" of some sort?
And your skill is just remarkable. Tony

Tony - Thank you so much for the compliments. I shot that from about 50 yards into the Old Coast Road, the dirt road that heads off into the mountains at the north end of the bridge, and I was standing on top of one of my Pelican cases to get the tripod a few inches higher to increase the distance between the top rail of the bridge and the rock in the water just above the bridge toward the right side of the frame. It's a trade off - the farther you go up the road, the higher you get but it also changes your angle. Next time I'll bring a ladder and move a few yards closer to the highway - maybe. You can probably get a good idea from Google Earth view. Here's a screen shot where I put a red X about where I was located.

Oh, without a doubt. I was just wondering how long the term lingered. But even telegraph required electricity, right? How was that supplied. Merle Haggard just referred to "the high line poles" in his songs.

What you didn't see those prairie dogs running in their circular cages out back Peter?

Unfortunately I had spent all my time looking at the Weston Gallery.

Edward Weston is the photographer I most admired and read his philosophy incessantly! I take what parts of his philosophy fit my "style" and intermingle those with other great photographers philosophies and pray I can make a composition worthy of a glance by members here!
His photographic foundations are exemplified in many other published photographers. A creative base if you will. From which I can learn and build my style upon!

Great dialogue!
Dan

Since the subject of Highway 1 conditions (and closures) along the Big Sur coast came up in this thread, I thought I'd share these links to a page with more information, including a rough estimate of when it might reopen.

(The posting date of the second one is a bit unclear. There are references to current conditions, but you'll see older dates. In any case, it is closed in the area described and will be for a while.)

- - -

One more thing. Check on the conditions of that "shortcut" route between Highway 1 and 101 in the middle of this section of the coast. It isn't always open.

- - -

Regarding Weston, if you know the right folks or are part of the right groups (or, perhaps still, if you are willing to rent overnight accommodations there) you can visit his home and see his darkroom. Compared to all of the digital technology we use today, it is shockingly simple.

Are you aware of anywhere online I can read up on Weston's philosophy? Would be interested in reading more.

I do NOT see any online information other than a few pages or such from some of his books. Harold Davis is also a photographer I admire if doing B&W.
Sorry Andrew!
