Might buy an old 300mm f2.8 NON IS. Has anyone used this on the R5? I just want to be sure they function correctly on the R5 with the EF to R adapter.

Obviously, looking at it because it is far less expensive, but don't want to waste money. Thank you in advance.

EDITED ***I MADE A MISTAKE ON THE ORIGINAL POST. THIS IS NOT IS****

My EF 300/f2.8IS and EF 200/f1.8 lenses work perfectly on my R5 bodies using the Canon EF-R adaptor. I can't speak for any non-Canon adaptors, though.

Thank you! I typoed. This lens is not the IS version.

It is only $500, but still want to be sure it isn't $500 wasted. Thanks.

A friend of mine uses the non-IS 300/2.8 on both a R6 Mark II and an R3. He shoots quite a bit of hockey with it. The only thing he notices is the focus is not quite as fast as his 400/2.8 IS. Your fps will be slower too, like the IS version. Around 15fps in electronic shutter and 7.5fps in mechanical shutter.

I don't have that lens but I own the EF 300 4L USM, bought in 1994. It works perfectly on my R, R7 and R6 MK II with Canon adapter. The only minor gotcha is the lens is so old LR and DPP4 lack a lens profile. However, it's so well corrected, distortion and light falloff are non-issues.

I use my first gen EF 300 f/2.8 non IS on my R3 regularly. It works fine. Never noticed if the frame rate is slower.

The framerate question with adapted lenses comes up from time to time. Here is Canon's official list of EF lenses supporting higher framerates:

https://support.usa.canon.com/kb/index?page=content&id=ART178047

Older EF lenses like the 300 f/2.8 will still work fine, but maximum framerates can be limited in some drive modes.

My 33-yeara-old 300/2.8 L works perfectly on both the R3 and R5. At first it was a little slow and sticky to focus. It had not been used much for several years and the lubricants were a bit stiff, I believe. The more powerful battery of the R3 kicked it into higher speeds right away and now the R5 is quite happy with it too.

My subject matter is an extremely fast border collie running agility under indoor arena light. Difficult light and subject. Usual exposure is ei 8000 to get 1/1000 second at 2.8 to 3.2. Both cameras handle the situation well. The R3 gets the nod most of the time due to the smaller file size.

Thanks, again, for the input.

Another question: Can an EF adapted to R lens add a 1.4 or 2x converter. Or, is that a waste?

IF an adapter can be added, do you use an R converter on the camera side of the adapter or an EF converter on the lens side? Probably a dumb question, but I honestly have never done this before.

Thanks!

Yes, you can use teleconverters just fine with the adapter. You would want to use an EF teleconverter with an EF lens. The camera registers the combo and adjusts the maximum aperture just as you would expect.

To reiterate what I said earlier, the EF/RF adapter is completely transparent. That is, the adapted EF lens is effectively a native lens on a Canon R body. With the exception of the framerate limitations mentioned above, your lens will have full functionality when using the adapter.

$500 is about $1000 below what these go for. Do you trust the seller?

I have the 300 2.8 IS v.1 and it works well with my R6.
