Hi Everyone,

I am going to Iceland in July, I currently have a Canon R5,100-500, 24-105 and 70-200 lenses.
In my SLR days I always took 2 bodies on a big vacation trip. So, I need another camera body.
Do I get an R7 for additional reach, or another R5.
Or maybe an R6 II.

All recommendations are welcome.

Thanks
Alan

I second the R7. That is essentially my backup camera since my wife carries it on our travels, while I carry my R5. The kit 18-150 is also a fun lens, very light, wide range, sharp, and close focusing. You might find yourself just taking that combo for less critical outings. Paired with the RF 100-400 it's my dayhike kit.

I'll also add that for serious travel I also carry a G1X3 to cover the 24-70 range when I have a tele or macro on my main body. I just got an iPhone 15 pro and the G is still the best backup I've found. 1 lb.

What is the focus of your photography for this trip?

My initial thought is R5. I really like having two identical cameras especially if the second is for back up purposes. Controls and settings are identical making it easy to switch between the two and keeps me from being preferential to one over the other if using both simultaneously. R5 is likely on its way out soon and prices are quite reasonable. Even if buying new, you're not likely to lose as much as you might normally at an earlier stage in the product cycle, if you want to resell the second camera after the trip. That the R5II will likely arrive at a price premium may maintain the used R5 price point around where it is now.

That said, if some of what you will photograph will benefit from the higher pixel density of the R7, it might be a consideration. But would you be satisfied with the R7 for all uses if the R5 packed it in?

The R5 also has a great feature that allows saving camera settings to the memory card and copying them over to another R5. This would make it trivially easy to keep the two cameras 'synced' so that the second really is a true back up of the first.

Been there for a whole month in September 2016. It’s landscape photography party time in Iceland. I would not see why you would need an APS-C camera unless you plan to shoot puffins with a very long focal in the north west; just make sure you get the best photograph quality. I had 2 bodies at the time: 5D III and a 1DX(1DX used mainly for it’s tracking capabilities to shoot sheep but now, with an R5, I would not need the 1DX or R3). Icelandic horses are coming to you when you get near the fence. Make sure you have a 70-200mm for landscapes. I had also with me the 16-35mm f/4 and the 24-70mm f/4 at the time and a sturdy tripod because it is a very windy place and sometimes extremely windy.

It’s a great place also for water fall so bring ND filters. Beware July is a very busy month and you will need a 4x4 to go outside Hwy 1 (that goes around Iceland) to shoot mountains and the inside country like the Landmannalaugar area.

JD

Have a nice trip!

Uggh. The R6 Mark II does not seem to have this feature, and I miss it terribly, coming from the 1D-X Mark II.

Mirrorless cameras require more customization than DSLRs ever did, as they are more things to set up. It is tedious to try to keep two bodies in "sync" manually. I honestly think this feature should become standard on any camera that is likely to be used by a professional.

R5 for sure. Buy one here and sell it for $100 less after your trip.

If you want more participation I would start a poll with the three options you proposed.

I was very unhappy with my R7 and sold it after 4 months.
R6II is a good camera. I will be adding another R5 or R5 MkII to my kit.

I went for the FF R6II after using and liking the R7 for several months. I wanted a FF R to use with the RF 24-105 L. After 1 week's use and finding its low light IQ didn't compare well to my 5D4 I traded it for the R5. The R5 seems a real upgrade from the 5D4 and not just because of its high MP count. The R7 has its issues by comparison, APS-C, loud mechanical shutter, slower readout, but is light weight and with good IQ in good light. I get excellent images from it. I really see the R7 as a different camera from the R5 with different strengths and weaknesses that complement the FF R.

Just an opposing opinion from a non-pro travel and nature photog. If you really want a duplicate backup I agree with the 2nd R5 idea.

The 7 line of cameras from Canon has to be the one that gathers the most divided opinions. I like my R7 very much, and would not have any trouble using it in Iceland.
That said, with the lenses mentioned I would pick the R5 as a backup camera for the same reasons Rscheffler mentions.

Puffins are not very shy. If you are allowed, you can get very close. I got some nice puffin shots with a tiny P&S on my first trip to Iceland.

Would bring a small wide angle, maybe the 16 mm.

The country is in a stressful situation now because of the ongoing volcanic activity on the Reykjanes penninsula. The 2500 citizens of Grindavik are long term evacuated and the whole country has a screaming shortage of accomodation.

I recommend you to take 14-35 lens to Iceland. Puffins are only 1 day of entire trip ? There is so many places which could benefit from wide angle lens

Surely missing an uwa > and really only need the 100-500: ditch the 70-200
As 2nd camera, bring a quality p&s with zoom, for quick snaps in town or short jolts
Missing too a light weight tripod and bring a bunch of quality wipe cloths > waterfall spray mist travel quite far and/or you can get very close

I do not intend to hijack the thread, but keen on knowing more about the R7.

Could you elaborate shortcomings of the R7?

Is it a challenge to change lenses in the field when in Iceland?

Is the 2nd body used as a backup when the 1st body fails or is it used in parallel with the 1st body?

I just got back from Iceland in October and we went from Reykjavik to Hofn and back, so mostly the south eastern part of the island. Here's the gear i took.

R5
16mm f2.8
50mm f1.8
24-70 F2.8
70-200 f2.8
100-500 4.5-7.1
DJI Mavic Mini Pro 3

Here are my favorites from the trip so you get an idea of what I ended up photographing.

https://adobe.ly/49JHi6U

Biggest question is what do you intend to photograph? I was out of puffin season so i actually never used my 100-500. Horses would come almost right up to you they were super friendly. Sheep were just off the road so they were easily shot with a 70-200. I only brought one body. Didnt really need two. We had some crazy wind in two places, one on a ridge in haifoss and the other on the black sand beach. I would never change lenses there, just put a lens on and leave it on. Mostly used the 24-70 in these locations. Bring batteries cause the cold will kill it fast, and get an external drive so you can offload hte photos from the memory card. Hope this helps I also loved Iceland so much i still think about it months later. Also there is a fantastic place in Reykjavik that does viking photos, i highly recommend! it was so much fun. Here is the link to that.

Thanks Everyone for all your suggestions.
Found a good deal on the buy and sell for an R5.
Decided to go with the same body for ease of settings

I'd not bother with a second camera at all. Waste of money IMO.

Hi Robin, Thanks for the reply,

I do not like to change lenses in harsh environments. This way I can protect the inside of the camera and the lens.

Also, have a backup in case a camera stops working.

Yes, that's what many say

The trouble with backups IMO is that they cost $$ and you end up not using them, or you do because you have them and they encumber your travel experience. I am not sure Iceland will be very harsh in July, just a little rain every now and then. The only time I ever used two cameras was in the days of film one with K64 and one with Ektachrome 200...so long ago. We are all different though!
