The E-mount barrel design resembles that of the CV 50/1 Nokton RF-mount, but the E-mount is lighter, weighing 590g compared to 650g. The closest to the M-mount barrel design is the CV 50/1 Nokon Z-mount, which is also my style preference.

The irony of the Voigtlander APOs having to use mounts fatter than the lens itself in order to fit on the Z cameras compared with this wide 50 f/1 having to funnel itself into the tiny E-mount opening

AF lenses, not MF lenses.

I read something that Canon doesn't allow third party manufacturers to make lenses in R-mount (through licensing of patents most likely).

True, but the E-mount is the closest to the original 50/1 M-mount in terms of that funnel-like shape.

Ah, no, look how they put all the distance information on the narrow part of the lens, though

I have the M mount and really like it paired with the new M11-P and 35mm f/1.5 Nokton. But man, they butchered the design. I think the M mount looks great, but the RF and now Sony versions look terrible IMHO.

I like the way the Canon version looks in real life (seen it in some shops and at last year's CP+) but the only thing is that it looked quite huge and it's rather heavy at 650g. As for the E-mount version, the narrow mount and much wider upper part do look a bit unbalanced but otherwise I like the way it looks. It's also nice that they made it lighter (590g).

This is how Cosina described the same surface pattern in case of Heliar classic 50/1.5:

"The full-metal focus ring is knurled with a diamond pattern using a dedicated cutting tool to improve operability with specifications that are not slippery in either directions in addition to the beauty of appearance."

I find that surface very pleasant in appearance and in use on the Heliar.

Well said, I'll grab my pitchfork too. Its a disappointment for users that made Sony their manual focusing platform with adapted and native lenses since day 1, only to see Sony unable to push a software update to compete with Canon and Nikon now.

We have some benefits with the Sony E-mount CV lenses like distance encoder + 5 axis stabilization that the Canon and Nikon versions of CV lenses don't have for some reason. Also several of the the Canon RF cameras have color shading issues with the native RF CV lenses that could not be compensated for by the lens profiles for some reason.

I wouldn't mind the option of some new manual focus aids on Sony cameras too mostly for shooting portraits and such (which I don't do much with manual lenses) but I also like the simplicity of using only focus peaking and magnification as well. Same thing on my Fuji X camera (X-S10) with CV lenses, there's nothing better than focus peaking and magnification there either but it works fine for my purposes.

Anyway, perhaps Sony and Fuji will be pushed to implement new manual focusing aids in the future too (have to wait and see)...

I think they used this knurled diamond pattern surface first on their VM 50/1.5 Heliar classic and it was used again in Canon RF 50/1.0 & 40/1.2 and now on Sony E 50/1.0 because they consider it to be a luxurious styling. I personally like it quite a bit on my Heliar classic and to me it looks nice with this new E-mount 50/1.0 as well as on the RF lenses too.

I really like the knurled diamond pattern on the 50/1.5 Heliar's focusing ring. I believe many were surprised/unhappy by the new 50/1 style as it differs from previous E-mount lenses. Nevertheless, I have a feeling it will look and feel great in the hands.

I agree it looks big and is heavy, though I find the weight is unnoticeable as it is well balanced weight wise on the R5.

Having the focus triangles on the R5 works perfect, when they line-up I find it is totally accurate at F1.0.

I found that 2/3 to 3/4 of the frame remains in crisp focus at F1.

Hijacking this thread to ask — is there a way to order from map without tax? Does buyee include it?

Their prices are hard to beat

It appears that the Buyee option on Map's site is no longer possible with most new products from major brands such as Canon, Nikon, Sony and unfortunately, also Voigtlander. This appears to be a relatively recent development at least for cameras and lenses when I checked about a month ago. You may have to try a forwarding service that is not integrated with Map's online store so that they don't know it's being sent out of country.

The price should be pretty similar at other stores, if for some reason Map does not work out.

Due to the nature of these forwarding services, the sale is made to a domestic address (the forwarder's warehouse) before being sent overseas. IIRC, tax is charged and not removed later. You would be able to find all of this information on the forwarder's website.

Is this AF/MF specific or mount itself-specific? I thought it was the latter (can be wrong). I don't follow Canon much anymore, not sure if there other MF lenses on the market with R-mount.

I believe it's that electronic mount communication is not permitted by Canon on third party lenses unless authorized by them. There are numerous manual focus lenses available for RF mount, primarily from newer lens brands out of China, but IIRC, none have electronic contacts to pass along EXIF for automatic IBIS implementation or activation of Canon's excellent non-magnified manual focusing aid. This would of course also exclude electronic aperture control and AF.

IIRC The Voigtlander 50/1.0 and 40/1.2 are the first third party lenses for RF mount with electronic communication, albeit no AF, which might be a reason Canon permitted these.

Does Canon have that "eyeMF" thingy where MF aid is automatically placed on the detected eye when using MF lens?

Thanks!
I think read somewhere here that only Nikon Zf has this functionality, but maybe it was simply the only Nikon that has it...
Anyways, it seems that Canon was first ...

Now, if only Sony woke up...

Could you imagine an A7CR with an ultra thin sensor and smart manual focus aid? I would drop dreams of a Leica M11 for that.

I checked at pre-order, and I checked last night, and the CV 28/1.5 is still not eligible as a Buyee product. So they are protecting new releases for a bit. I wonder how long for though. My guess is 3-6 months.

Not likely but it's possible for Sony to add this feature through a firmware update and the sensor be modified. The drawback would be the potential loss of accurate auto white balance and white balance presets. Custom white balance would likely be the only reliable option with modified sensors.

I just tried again to confirm: I selected random lenses from various brands that are not new releases and it wouldn't let me use Buyee. It stated: "this item cannot be purchased because it is not eligible for overseas sales." Each and every time. It didn't come across as a new release restriction, rather a ban on most major brand cameras, lenses and probably other items. Used lenses were no problem through Buyee.
