Odd question but when I spend a couple hours at my PC processing my back tightens up. The chair I use now is a cheapo from Walmart so I wanted to ask if anyone can suggest something a bit better?

Yes, less time at the PC would be good but ......

what you need to do is to go to a business furniture store and start to look into what you like/prefer. slip into a few. my 30+yr old Herman Miller Aeron Chair is now coming to the end of its life and has served me well. back then it was $700 and is in sizes for fit. these days it's in the same range but with options more available.

as to going from a cheap Walmart as a baseline you have lots to look at and try on. everything is a matter of preference and price.

The Hon Ignition 2.0 is fairly affordable ($400), easily adjustable, and very comfortable. We have one, and it's great if you want new. Otherwise, find a used office furniture store and pick either a Herman Miller Aeron or Steelcase Gesture. The Gesture has the rep of being the "best" but I prefer the Aeron. I see the Aeron here in Denver for about $400-500 quite often.

I fluked out about 5 years ago and found this chair on a great deal and it has been excellent. It still looks and fuctions like new and it's used almost everyday. Comfortable and durable enough to deal with my 230lbs. The molded aluminum base really makes it difference, it just doesn't flex at all.

It is a gaming chair company mostly but this particular model isn't too garish.

I just bought a Herman Miller Embody for my WFH office, its night and day difference from a cheap chair. I went new from an office supply store because my local area didn't have a lot on Facebook Marketplace - but if you're in or close to a large metro area there are usually a lot of posts from business shutdowns where you can pick up an expensive office chair for pennies on the dollar.

I don't have Herman money so I ended up with this guy recently, very comfortable: https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/inbox-zero-risco-adjustable-height-task-chair-w005586817.html.

I did a slight modification where I fully removed the built in lumbar support, and I replaced the wheels with rollerblade wheels since we have hard wood and I didn't want a mat under it. These have been amazing https://amzn.to/3UFEdRi

All told very happy for around $150 spend. I like that I can put the arms fully back when I don't want them.

Herman Miller Aeron is probably one of the best ergonomically. I have one, my wife has one, and my son (in the gaming industry) also has one. Pricey, but well worth it for your back. My son picked one up used and saved several hundred dollars. My wife and I picked up ours during a Herman Miller sale, and also save a bit too.

Mine's more like the chair from Ghostbusters, that grabs your arms and legs, and runs you into the refrigerator.

Actually, I use a Herman Miller Aeron, too.

I also have a Herman Miller Aeron, but I got a stool since I have my desk at a standing height and when I need to sit, I can just pull the stool up and plop my butt down. SeatingMind.com has used Herman Millers. I also found a bunch of used ones for my office -- probably Craigslist-- with a sled bottom for a couple of hundred dollars each. The Herman Millers come in different sizes, so you would need to go somewhere that has them & find your size, then start hunting for used ones. You really need to go & sit in a bunch of chairs & find what's comfortable for you. When I was in PT school, someone came around to talk to us about chairs -- some are made for people who basically slump and it will sort of curl around them, then others are made for those who sit upright & it will support them that way. If you're a slumper, then the ones made for upright postures won't feel supportive and if the other way around, it'll feel like it pushes you forward. Happy hunting!

While my son did buy the Herman Miller Embody new and it is indeed comfy, I hit a local office furnishing reseller and got a used spruced up Steelcase Leap 2 about 6 months old for around 350 dollars.

Just a thought.

I purchased a Herman Miller office chair 12 years ago. Have sat in it nearly every day since. (A lot of my work uses this Mac as a tool.) About 3 years ago, replaced the seat. One joint had failed. Replacement not expensive. I recognize that significant capital investments are always a challenge (maybe if you're rich it could be, or course if you're buy a Maybach might be a problem).

Think of it this way - a $700 chair divided by 12 years is < $60 annually. Guarantee a cheap chair won't last long, plus this is true functional comfort.

I've always used an Aeron for three reasons: they're incredibly ergonomic and comfortable chairs, spares are readily available should they need repair, and they're always available locally for under half price from private sellers or business liquidation warehouses.

Thanks for the links and heads up as I'm searching for a chair also. Curious as to why you took the lumbar support out? Or am I just to old that I need one?!

It’s made of molded plastic and I just found it too uncomfortable even at the “least supportive” setting.

I sit on a 24 inch medicine ball. Been using it for 8 years or so.
Sometimes I'll turn on some music while I work and I'll bounce a lil bit. I love the bounce.

Did you find a comfortable stool? Years ago, I was fortunate to have an office at work where part of my desk (holding my computer monitor) was standing height, and the rest was normal height for when I was doing non-computer work. I also had a stool, but it wasn't particularly comfortable. I was young then, so it didn't really bother me, but these days I would want (need?) something more comfortable.

I guess the alternative is to get an adjustable desk so I can stand, and when i need to sit I can just lower it. Good adjustable desks are also expensive, but at this point I can probably afford it, and it would be worth it, considering the amount of time I spend in front the computer.

It's a Herman Miller Aeron stool, so it's very comfortable. Kind of hard to find (at least used), but well worth it.
