p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Problems tethering with Z8 and C1 23

I'm running a macbook pro 16" M1 chip running the latest OS, capture one 23 with needed updates to tether with the Z8/Z9. Tether tools USB-C to USB-C 15 ft, with no booster cable (which I'm guessing is probably the issue).

Most of the time, it takes a few seconds to show the Z8 as connected in Capture One. I often end up having to disconnect everything, restarting and then reconnecting to get it to work for a session. My D850 on the other hand connects right away, and without any issues for the most part.

Anyone else running into this issue with the Z8? Will just getting a booster cable fix this, or should I switch from Tethertools to another brand?

Not sure about the C1 issue but Nikon just released big update to their free NX Tether which added LV support. It works rather well. I did a quick walkthrough video the other day:

You can download the V2 NX Tether here:

The typical answers to this problem are: 1) remove any cards in camera, 2) install the latest firmware for the camera, 3) get a better cable - not from Tethertools - go with Jebi, LVNA or Area51

Side note: there's no such thing as booster cables at this point that I see in use anywhere regularly - they are a relic of prior gen tether cables, USB3 for sure, and then early USB-C would benefit by a power injection for initial connection (with some camera models). The latest (good) tether cables USB-C to USB-C, solve these issues.

Thanks everyone. Appreciate the alternatives. Ended up ordering the Jebi 10 meter plus 10 meter extension. Also thanks for the insight on the powered extension boosters - I used them off and on a few years ago, and they were always unreliable so ended up ditching them.

When the setup worked, it was really nice being able to just throw a power bank onto the Z8 and not worry about swapping batteries while it was in a ceiling rig over wet paint

Also got to try out my multiple camera sync (just my D850 triggering the Z8) to one D2 1000 strobe with the JJC cheapo triggers. It worked surprisingly well, so long as both cameras had a trigger on the hot shoe, and I didn't go crazy with my flash pops in terms of FPS. I am going to give the PW multisyncs another try, and just relegate the JJC ones to backup.

Following up to confirm that the Jebi cables work great with the Z8, Z6ii and D850 (using the extender plugged into the TT cable). All sync up in Capture One in 2-3 seconds after plugging them into the camera. I also like how thin the cable is. Now I just need to recycle the old TT cables. Thanks @jlafferty!

Be sure to read the tips on the LVNA site:

Always power off the camera in between battery swaps and lens changes.

Never place camera down on surface on tethering side to save your port and cable from bending!

Use a high quality tether lock to secure cable and tethered connection on camera.

Longevity:

Cables shouldn’t be considered expendables. Follow these simple tips to keep your cables in great shape and ready for every shoot!

Keeps your cables in 10-12” coils and use a velcro tie to secure ends.

Always follow the memory of the cable when coiling and gently work out any kinks.

For heavy kinks - lay your cable out in the sun for 5-10 minutes and gently work them out, then recoil. This will work wonders for cables that won’t coil nicely!

Do not submerge cable into water.

Do not roll over your tether cables with monitor stands, carts, dolly, rollerblades, skateboards, crafty tables, makeup tables, etc. Same applies to dropping things on the cable. It will break. :/

Thanks. No issues since I picked up the Jebi cables to replace my old TT ones, which have seen several years of use so probably worth replacing anyways.

Mine arrived and I tested it (jebi 32 foot) just now. Seems to work great in my test. Nice light cable.

Nice, yes I am enjoying how light the cable is as well. I need to figure out a better way to manage the cable, as I find that the lighter and more flexible cable tends to get tangled easier than my old TT ones. One thing I've been doing lately with the 32 ft is coiling it in two equal length sections, as a lot of times I only need 15 ft or so. It is really nice though having 20 meters of cable in my bag with the extension.

I've noticed that with the Z8 (mirrorless) cameras, my macbook tends to want the card removed to connect, whereas the D850 doesn't seem to be as finicky with the old TT cable.

Little update on this. The Jebi cables are still working great. I've yet to even need the extension because the 32 ft is usually plenty for how far I stray from the tethering station.

Highly recommend removing the card from the Z8 (and Z9) when you're tethering. Lately the only reason why it won't connect initially to Capture One is because I've forgotten there's a card in there.
