Thanks, I hear ya ... just wondering, as I consider what 40 I might consider, if I should move off my 40 Cron. Granted, the Ultron isn't an option for the M (well, not via rangefinder, just LCD or Visoflex), but still good to hear your .02 on it.

I don't know enough about it all to comment with certainty, but can you adapt the F Ultron to M? Thought they had adapters for such things.

What the 40/1.2 gives you is a darn-close-to-medium-format look on FF at 1.2...and in my experience, comes with a ton of CA, far more than I cared to deal with in post.

Many of the best looking shots I've seen with the 1.2 seem to be in somewhat dreary/overcast conditions...not a "luxury" I have here

The 40/2 focusing feels better to my hand, which is pretty important with these lenses. I also like how it pulls double duty on my Z and my F film bodies...it's a great, tiny lens on the FM3A.

I had taken some direct comparison shots between the

Yes, extreme axial chromatic aberration and an onion ring pattern are my only criticisms of the 40/1.2 lens. Newer designs incorporating double aspherical elements exhibit significantly reduced inner patterns in specular highlights.

I also think the Nokton 58 is great. My heart wants me to prefer the Ultron 40, since I had it since it came out and its so small and nice. But ultmatly I prefer the results from the 58mm.

I've long been thinking about getting one. It would be nice to shoot on 35mm film and when/if I take the dive into GFX I would adapt it along with my 28/2.8.

Is there any rumbling about a II version of the 1.2? That would certainly be interesting.

Yeah, but the adapter wouldn't be able to operate the rangefinder focusing mechanism. You'd have to focus off the image plane via either the LCD or the hotshoe attached Visoflex, for EVF only focusing (i.e. no optical focusing).

Alternatively, you can use the distance scale for zone focusing, and the optical rangefinder for composition framing only (either inside the 35 lines, or outside the 50 lines).

It would be a concession to relinquish the RF focusing patch, when using a F > M adapter, so that gets put in context of "pick your poison(s)", too as it pertains to handling vs. IQ.

Ah, that makes perfect sense, thanks for the explanation!

Still, it could make for an interesting comparison to see how it fares vs. the 40 Cron. I reckon I could put the Visoflex on (I mean, it's in my bag) if I really took a liking to the Ultron. Could be an "application use" thing, too. I do quite a bit of zone focusing with my 40 Cron, and when not doing that, I could use the LCD.

The bookends of focusing are kinda like this, for me.

Fastest focusing possible = pre-focused, zone (i.e. no focusing).
Slowest focusing possible = punching in 10X, micro adjustment.

The optical RF sits between these two for focusing application use. That's the middle ground (mainstay of an RF focusing system) I'd be losing with the adapter.

I'm a 35mm shooter 90% of the time or more with my M and the CV 35/2 Ultron II really performs well. I have been wanting to give the CV 40/2.8 a try, but need to pull the trigger on it someday..

I have a Q for a little wider and have put some thought into finding a small 50 or the 40/2.8 as my only M lens and parting with the rest...

Don't try the CV 65mm APO then. You'll buy one and get all twisted up about which one to use. It's a great problem to have.

I have wished that Cosina would manufacture this one with an LTM or M mount. There are no frame lines for the 65mm angle of view, but, there is the precedent of the Leica 65mm lens, made for use with the Visoflex. Today, of course, there is Live View, and the electronic Visoflex.

There isn't a CV lens about which I feel that way. I greatly admire a lot of their lenses, but haven't been moved to keep any long term. I'd probably feel different about them if I were a dedicated M-mount shooter. If they ever port their Ultron 35/2 Macro over to e-mount, I'll buy one (new, even) because that lens was one of my favorite parts of experimenting with Fuji APSC, but I doubt it'll reach cold, dead hands status.

The lenses Cosina makes with the blue badges, on the other hand, are an entirely different story.

Love the CV 35/2 Ultron too. Modern look with character.

I should try the 35/2 APO Macro X-mount.

I think of the many CV lenses I have tried, given the price, size and other options available, my favorites are

The CV 35/2 Ultron which I have been using consistently since launch.

The CV 40/1.2 I admire too for it’s small size, pleasant draw, speed and unique focal length. I borrow it from a close friend from time to time but it’s screws up my spacing and as a one lens kit, I prefer 28mm or 35mm.

The new 28/1.5 threw me off at first because I expected more of a CV 28/2 Ultron ASPH performance, but after I got used to a couple things, I really love the CV 28/2 Ultron and 28/1.5 Nokton.

Those 4 lenses are my favorites from CV.

But the CV 35/2 Ultron most. I’ve used it for everything with lovely results.

I'd say both APO Lanthar (35/50) and CV 28mm f/1.5. All 3 of those lenses complete with the very best comparable offerings from Leica, have nice draws, and are quite versatile.

75/1.5 is wonderful. I really enjoy using it.

I only appreciated my 35/1.7 Ultron a couple of years after I sold it, when looking at images from it. Low key ones were exceptionally moody, reminding me of the 35 Lux pre-ASPH.

In SLR mount, the 58/1.4 Noct rendered beautifully, but I always thought its focus ring was too loose.

It was Nehemiah who turned me on to the 35/2 Ultron and I'm glad he did; it's one of my most frequently used lenses, especially when I travel. I've shot it on Sony and on film; I prefer shooting it on digital. On film I love the 35/2.5 Color-Skopar LTM.

The CV 35/2 Ultron produces images that are quite similar to the Leica 35/1.4 FLE, rather than the earlier 35/1.7 Ultron, which has a smoother rendering. So, even though it's sharp like the f/1.7 version, it adds a lot of character to the rendering. I see it as a smaller version of the 35 Lux...and that black paint on brass is gorgeous!

I have a little album of photos I've shot with the 35/2 Ultron (mostly on Sony but a few on film with a Leica M2-R), here: https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjAuNRq

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all the (quite a few) CV’s I’ve had, but am down to the 50/1.5 II and a recently acquired 35/2.0 Ultron II—neither of which I expect to part with.

Yup.

It would be fun to have a thread for it
