I don't think that's a good deal. Over the holidays Sony ran a promotion where if you trade something in you could get $1000 of a NEW body. You could basically trade any working lens or camera in. However, my local camera shop just put on the receipt a cheap 50mm lens to get me the bonus. One of the big NY camera stores sent me a code to order the new body before I even sent anything in to trade. I have a feeling down the road you could see a new A1 body go for $5500.

This is not so much about the money. More important where are these bodies getting the service of a refurb. Are they going to a Sony repair facility or a Sony approved repair shop. Heck it could be an employee clean them up and stick in a box. Not sure I trust this

I just got one from KEH, Excellent+ rating, for $4100, comes with 180-day warranty. It is indeed in excellent condition and am quite happy with it so far.

Yea KEH is a good place and a photo shop. Most likely have repair staff. I would trust them far more on the repair service side.

I wouldn’t be surprised if these are simply returns or opened/damaged box items. I bought several (non-photography related) “Amazon renewed” items and these were just that, damaged box items still in like new condition.

Another option would be that Amazon is getting refurbs from Sony.

Here is one of the reviews posted on Amazon’s website (accessible via the link in my original post): “I was skeptical about purchasing a 'renewed' a1 camera at a discounted price from a brand new one, crazy thing is, this body I got has never been used! straight out of the box, first thing I wanted to do was check the shutter count to see how used this renewed camera would be, and it had no clicks on it.”

Luckily, these “renewed” items are covered by Amazon’s standard return policy so if something doesn’t seem right, one can always return it for free.

It may not even have an A1 in the box when it arrives. And a return will have your money held by Amazon probably for a couple of months. Just search for posts on FM. Anyone buying cameras/lens from Amazon these days is asking for trouble.

Amazon's reputation in refurb selling has not been without bumps. Just like reading product reviews on their site. Read enough and it comes down to some like and and others don't. But hey, if one has the money and an Amazon refurb doesn't set off any warning bells then go for it.
