If you could only have 3 lenses, what would they be?

p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · If you could only have 3 lenses, what would they be?

Recently we had fun picking only one lens. But I think picking only 3 lenses, if only for a trip, is something we might actually do. I would take my 28-60 for walking and landscapes. My 55mm f1.8 for people shooting. And my Tamron 70-300mm for wildlife. I have the superb Sony 100-400mm but I mostly grab my 70-300 for lightness.

For the previous three summers I shot mostly bees. I accumulated thousands of bee photos. Mostly with Tam 70-180 f2.8, shot at f11 on a 16mm extension tube. I sometimes used 90 macro, but preferred the 180mm, which gave about 0.4x magnification on the extension tube. Late last summer I got the new 70-200 f4 0.5x macro, which was totally great. But I intend to eschew bees this summer. It's time to move on.

35 Lux Pre-ASPH
Noct 50/1

GM 24/1.4

The two Leica’s would annoy me often because they’re not very well corrected for many types of photography. Having said that, they have produced most of my favorite images since owning.

I find the GM 24 to have a pretty draw and be superbly versatile. On resolution bodies like nowadays, it makes for a good 35/2 crop option.

Most used: Loxia 25/2.4, Voigtlander 35/2 and 50/2 APOs

Most logical: Loxia 25, Voigtlander 50, 85/4Tele-Tessardo

Edit: that's for landscape use while hiking, mostly, but also for more general purposes

Many thanks for all the responses. I think we would enjoy reading what you would shoot with each.

Sony 16-35mm f4 PZ
Samyang 45mm f1.8
Tamron 50-400mm

I.e., my actual current setup.
16-35 and 50-400 cover all my landscape needs.
And a light and compact normal prime for situations with bokeh or low light.

This is an easy question if you are shooting people and documenting life in general. You'll want a wide-angle, a standard and a tele-lens. What those lenses are (focal lengths, speeds & brands) is a matter of taste (lots of good options there). If you have a personal vision and style, you probably won't need even all three lenses and can work, for example, with just two lenses.

When people build their setups and want to able to shoot with any focal lengths from 16 to 200, I feel they don't have very clear vision either of their (a) subject, or (b) personal style. They fall into a trap where they need that they have to 'have it all' to be 'prepared for anything' - which usually means in practice 'nothing'. It is of course totally acceptable as everyone goes through this kind of phase. Once your style starts to develop and you get the idea what you are trying to achieve with your photography, the less is usually more.

If I remain the family hybrid shooter persona I just took on: 24 GM, Batis 40, Batis 85 (my current 3 lens line up)

If I became the landscape photographer I always wanted to become: 16-35 GMII, 24-70 GMII, 70-200 GMII (with 2x TC)

If I became the retired world traveler I hope to be one day: 21 SEM, CV 40/1.2, CV 75/1.9

If I followed this assignment: 24 GM, CV 40, 70-200 GMII

My choices would be different for professional and personal scenarios. For personal stuff, the lenses I have most fun with are the 55/1.8, the 100-400GM, and then it's a toss up between the Sigma 85/1.4 and the 90/2.8 Macro. For professional probably the 24-70GMii, 70-200GMii and then a toss up between the 35GM and 85/1.4.

Great thread. I would self-profile these days as the retired traveller, with a strong desire to keep daily carry light. I also don't care about having focal ranges to cover most or all probable scenarios. I like wide angles for their prospective drama, suitability to capturing urban scenes, architecture and so on.

I also like going out with just one lens. Together with not loving frequent lens changes out on the streets, this skews my lens choices away from the usual coverage and gapping priorities that work for many. Think of the following as one or the other for an outing, possibly with a good but smaller prime for certain situations.

PZ 16-35/4
20-70/4
One of 55/1.8, Sigma 90 or FE 24/2-8 (likely next purchase is the last one)

Brian

I have too many lenses, as is.

Sony 90mm macro
Sony 20-70mm F4
Sony 70-200mm GM ii F2.8

I don't own the 70-200mm GM yet, so in its place would be Sony 100-400mm.
Hiking/outdoors is main consideration.

I don't have many lenses, but for uses that include, general use, landscapes (wide and tele), sunsets, hiking and grandkids...

Tamron 28-200 (have)
Sigma 35/2 (have) and 90/2.8

Sometimes just the Tamron, others, both primes.
