The 100-300 is the best overall choice for landscape IMO, provided one does not mind it being manual focus. Sharp throughout the range (best from 100-200 though, 300 is still good but does fall off a bit, perhaps similar to the falloff you might expect from a 1.4TC on the GMII) and pretty compact - stores upright in my camera bag if I take the adapter off. Cheap too. The main thing is being an old lens, availability of good quality used samples is patchy, and you may need to keep an eye on eBay/B&S/other for a while before a

I find AF to be a negative for landscape as I’d much rather manually focus and use focus zooming to ensure what I want is in focus. Most, if not all, AF lenses are lousy to manually focus with the focus throw is so short. I have the Sigma 100-400, but to manually focus that lens is painful, so I went out and got a manual focus in that range.

Yeah, I don't use AF for most landscapes. For telephoto landscapes, my own composition style for these shots typically sees the entire scene at infinity focus though, so provided prevailing lighting conditions etc were OK for AF, it would likely work OK for me. There's also the focus stack feature on A7RV, which will go out to infinity, so would be another option if focus stacking telephoto shots.

I can't believe Tamron is losing.

Nature can be messy so a zoom can help to isolate and compose better shots. Can't really say I've ever needed more reach than the 70-200 for landscape but there maybe an occasion or two where you might need more reach. According to your profile, you have the a7RV so there is always the ability to bump it into aps-c mode providing and additional reach to 280mm. Add a 1.4tc and you'll have 392mm. BTW: IQ with the added glass of the 1.4tc is still very good

70-200GM MKII for me... I need the 70mm end often, and 280mm end with 1.4tc is razor sharp for landscape use. 99% of the time this one lens does it all. I've had the 100-400GM, and while a great lens I rarely needed reach beyond 300mm for my landscapes...but I often wanted something wider than 100mm could provide

What focal length range do you expect to want to use? I routinely use 100-200mm but can count on one hand the number of times I have used or wished I had >200mm. Note that I am not suggesting it is inappropriate to want or use that…for me, it has just been quite rare.

The reason for the question is that there are many cheap - but outstanding optically - 100, 135, and 200mm primes. Particularly if you can work with just one, that makes for a flexible but nimble kit. For instance, I will often take a wide zoom (eg, 14-24 or 16-35…or a 28 or 35 prime) and a 100 or 135 prime.

As has been noted above, high quality zooms generally weigh a fair amount, may be better at one end or the other of their range, and cost a fair amount. A two lens combo with a big gap in focal length can be a way to mitigate that. Obviously, not ideal, if you expect to be in the rain or a dusty setting.

The sigma 180mm 5.6 APO is a great lightweight prime if you can live with that. Always delivers high quality results and it’s the most compact prime you’ll find in that range (probably the best performing too)

I have the Sony 100-400 and Tamron 70-300. They are both fine lenses. I can't recall not choosing the Tamron for a landscape outing since I've had both. Having said that, there will be rare times where 300mm is not long enough for me so I will take the 100-400 + 1.4x TC. This is specific to landscape photography.

The 100-400mm FL has served me well for landscape photography. I don't have one now and do miss it.

I've never used a 70-200mm FL but I know how much I used my old lens at 200mm+ so I think I would not be truly happy with one.

Sadly I think the day has come for me to retire my venerable CY 100-300 for good. I happened to take a close look at the lens today whilst fishing inside my dry cabinet for some other gear, and devastatingly it seems to have developed the infamous haze issue on the rear element, sometime over the last ~9 months (as it was clear when I used in NZ back in June. Have not done any landscape photography with it since.)

It served me very well over the years I owned it though, I have captured countless images I love with it.

I think a 70-200 GM II will be the replacement. It is the only lens that, from what I can see, would compare in sharpness to the CY 100-300. That price is a bitter pill to swallow though

The 70-200GM II is probably my favorite landscape lens. Here are a few:

Mountains, yeah…I would use them for mountains. Not many of those around here. Nice one.
