I was in Harpers Ferry, WV this Friday morning,...a fantastic place to go during the week. When I was there I was the only one besides the "erq-esque" citizens.
I entered the Provost Marshal's Office, took some images and heard some papers ruffling from another room....I went to see and saw this man at work by a kerosene light. On the right are shadows from that lamp on the walls. I converted it into B&W but found the warm glow and intimacy of a lone person being observed and photographed to good to change! Just me.

Beautiful image Dan. It seems to be telling a variety of stories.

I don't think it would work near as well in b&w. Good call.

I agree Larry! When I was there it had a real warm tone. I shoot raw 100% so when I postprduced it to mon, something just wasn't there! Could be I am not "seeing" that.

Hopefully others that view this will offer their $.02! Good or bad!

I like the colors and that is what makes the mood to me. Back in the day incandescent lighting was mostly shot with film to match the lighting. I always liked daylight film in order to keep that same mood you have captured in digital. It was called reciprocity factor in long exposures. Also the poster cutting through the light is perfect.

Small comment-you might want to see if a crop the top could eliminate that slant one sees with light and dark areas above the window. Rotating it slightly might also help with that.

Thanks for you comments Louis! I kept the slants because of 1) the kerosene lamp cast some very strange shadows on the right side of the frame.2) The windows alcoves also cast shadows on the walls. The bedframe post aslo provided a wonderful geometric shadow but I could NOT get into a position to shoot it.
I found another image of this gentleman in the room from the hallway entrance. He is in the left side of the frame.

Will have to process that.
