I really liked the R8, had two of them a few years back. It is, in my opinion, the best manual wind automatic camera. The viewfinder is amazing, the handling really good and the features excellent (apart from the stupid AE lock on the R8 which is fixed on the R9). It feels amazing on hand and it looks fantastic in black.
Like all things Leica further lenses will be more expensive than other brands. Also the R9 is trending at £800-1000+ in the UK which is a lot of money for a dead system. The R8 is half that.
I'd say if you think the money is ok get one, they are really great cameras....Show more →

I had an R8 and R9, still have the R9. As Panos mentioned these are the greatest manual focus auto exposure 35mm slrs made for all the reasons he mentioned. And I’ve pretty much gone through all of them..
The only slip up IMO is Leica should have made a dedicated on/off switch, instead of incorporating it in the exposure mode dial.
I sold the R8 as I didn’t need two of basically the same camera, and it was a total beater compared to the R9 - not the camera’s fault but from previous owners.
Don’t switch the lens mounts. I did that to one 50 Summilux I had so I could use it on my F6 and it was a miserable experience compared to using it on a Leica as you lose the auto aperture stop down. Also the manual focus on the F100 pales in comparison to using it on an R8/9....Show more →

I will echo Huss' comment about not switching the lens mount. For R lenses, the focus feel and accuracy are far better with R8/R9. I have both R8 and F100. F100 is a good camera but with R8/R9, you will have a difference experience.
Alright, you bunch of salesmen. I agree. I've owned both the R8 and 9 before, so I'm happy to pick up another. And have. I should have a black R9 with the Vario-Elmar 35-70/4 waiting for me when I get home. Because, you know, the 90 and 180 would be lonely in a kit.
That said, if they were both six-hole lenses and simple to swap, I'd probably go that way. I converted all my R mounts to A when I was shooting the a900/a99/a99II and was never unhappy (always use Leitax). It's really just the idea of screwing up the alignment on the 180 with all four long screws removed that worries me. Well, that and making sure the aperture continues to work.
