Today I got a call from a family member who was at a local estate sale. She spotted a camera for sale for $10.00 and asked me if I was interested. I asked her to send me a picture. Turns out it was a 35mm film Canon RT with a Canon 50mm f1.8 FL. I told her to buy it. The camera is in great condition! Speeds all seem accurate, shutter curtain looks great, even the lens had clear elements (outer barrel has signs of wear, but lens performs flawlessly)!

I recently bought two focusing spot lights that retail for about $1,000 each for $50 each. They were a little dirty inside and out, but work flawlessly after cleaning. A bit big for my small studio, but fun to have and a great price. The full size light spot at 24' distance is about 7' diameter. I didn't need them, but couldn't resist. There were four and I only took two. I had no idea what I would have done if I had bought all four, but I have been grinding my teeth ever since for leaving them behind. They were gone a few days later.

Recently found someone locally who was getting rid of some Sony full frame stuff in a moving sale (A7R4 and a few lenses). I tried things out for a couple of weeks before deciding to stick with APS-C due to the smaller form factor. It was nice to be able to try the gear out, though.

If by deal you mean crazy good deal then this probably doesn't qualify. I got a voigtlander bessa II for $500 CAD, which was below ebay prices and the camera was mint so I went for it. So from the monetary perspective it may not have been an amazing deal, but the sheer amount of joy I get when I use it makes it worth it.

Now that is an incredible find. I just found my XA in a drawer and of course it's batteries were dead, but the same type of batteries in my FM are still good 20 years later.

Don't forget that the XA cameras use an electronic shutter, and that when you advance the film you're energizing the shutter and placing a load on the batteries. On most XA type cameras the batteries tend to die within a year. The fact that you got one with good batteries would imply that the camera was recently used or perhaps that it was stored without winding to activate the electronic shutter.

It's probably a good idea to remove the batteries during an extended period of non-use.

My latest purchase deal was in December last year: a used Canon 50/1.2 LTM lens in EX condition for a very good price. Waited 4 years to see such deal again. Lots of lemons out there with this lens - had two of them in the past and had to return them. In one case the aperture setting was misaligned (f/1.2 was shown at f/2.8 stop on the ring) and the other one had a reversed lens element dedicated for close-up only (which the seller was unaware of until he tested and confirmed it). This one I bought recently is now a fantastic copy. Used it both on film and digital successfully.

My latest purchase is a Kodak Retina IIc. The lens module was replaced by a previous owner from a 50/2.8 Xenon to the faster 50/2.0 xenon. I sent the camera for CLA and it came back looking and working as new. And it makes awesome photos.

Picked up the Contax 100-300 for $400. Great price for this legendary lens. I also picked up an HP Z3100 44” printer for $300 which I’ll use for parts to keep my other two HP printers going. These printers sold for more than $4,000 in their heyday.

The 8-track player arrived yesterday. The 8-track tape was ordered today. They're props in a photo project that I'm working on.

Man, that 8-track machine weighs a ton. I'd empty it out, but it would probably mess up its tape-holding capabilty. Big question is; should I use a pack of matches or a pack of papers, to wedge the 8-track tape into the correct alignment?

Pentax Espio 24 EW for $50, Samsung AF Slim Zoom for $20. The Nikon I already had.
Super cameras, and very fun to use.

Samsung AF Slim for $70. In this shape they go for at least double that. Kicking lens and very responsive camera - it fires the shutter whether it has achieved focus or not. Very loud camera... Macro focuses automatically down to 15 inches or so, which is v cool.

Paul Barden in Corvallis, Oregon took over after Chris Sherlock retired. However, he states on his website that he does not service reflex Retinas.
