Dear all,

being curious I always enjoy discovering which gear are the other fellow members using.

In this early 2024 I am using a Gitzo series 1 traveler tripod with a Markins ballhead.

Stay all well!

I am still using a Feisol CT-3442. I think I bought it around 2009. It was the strongest and lightest tripod I was able to find at the time and it still compares very favorably to today's options at 2-3X the price. Build quality is no different than Gitzo, RRS, etc. as far as I have been able to tell.

It only weighs ~1KG and has a load capacity of 55lbs / 25KG. Folded, it's under 19" / ~48cm which is bigger than dedicated travel tripods, but still plenty small to put in luggage or strapped to the side of a backpack.

I also use mine with a Markins ballhead for the same reasons as I went with the Feisol tripod - it was the lightest option with the highest load capacity. 50KG / 110lb load capacity and it only weighs ~500g / 1.2lbs. As far as I know, no other ballhead has that level of efficiency.

So that combo only weighs a total of ~1.5KG, collapses down to a size I am happy with, has an extremely high load capacity, and is very stable. Everything still works like it did when it was new, so I've been very happy with the quality.

I have no idea when I will need to replace it, possibly never.

Have had an RRS BH-40 with a TVC-24 for around a decade and it still serves me well.

I probably use my RRS TFC-24L, with an Arca-Swiss P0, the most. I have beefier options (PMG TRS344L, RRS TVC-22i) that I use with an Arca-Swiss P1+ or Katana Jr gimbal head.

I've been using TVC-24mkII and Arca-Swiss D4 for years shooting landscapes and astro with telescopes, very capable combo. Now I'm tempting Ascend-14 for air travels or vacations with family, an analysis crisis in choosing the platform or the included ballhead one.

Primary tripod is a 5 Series Gitzo Gigantic - the one that goes to ten feet with a center column, used with either the Gitzo friction center column or the Leofoto geared center column that's a damned good clone of the grossly overpriced Gitzo geared column, usually with an Arca-Swiss Cube but sometimes with a Manfrotto 405 or when I need something really heavy duty, the gnarly Cambo geared head that normally lives on the 12' Cambo UST Camera Stand.

You forgot the matching step ladder for the tripod they would pretty much be a set.

I use one of three tripods:

1. ultralight, Gitzo 0540 CF (wt. 0.8kg, cap. 5kg);
2. light, Feisol CT-3441S (wt. 1.2kg, cap. 20kg);
3. heavy & clunky, Manfrotto 055GS (wt. 2.8kg, cap. 7kg)

I use the Gitzo for light hiking and small airplane travel, when I want more than a tabletop can do, but with an emphasis on light and small. Usually, this Gitzo has a RRS BH-25 head (v. small).

I use the Feisol for most situations. It's small and light, and can support a 1D-series + 500/4L IS, with no issues. The Feisol has three heads, on three dedicated centre-posts: (1) RRS BH-30 LR, (2) Acratech leveler + Feisol FP-70 pano head + 8" nodal rail; and (3) Arca-Swiss C1 Cube. The Feisol has a set of wicked ice-spikes (which I have used, more than once).

I have two Manfrotto 055GS; one lives in the car trunk, with a Manfrotto 468MG Hydrostatic head, and the other in the studio, with a Manfrotto 410 geared head, and on a set of tripod wheels.

For big lens stuff (EF 500/4L IS) I sometimes use the Feisol with the 500/4L IS clamped directly onto the Cube. More often, I use a Wimberley Sidekick, on the 468MG head.

My most used tripods have been a couple of Slik U212 Deluxe at about 5.5 lbs each. They are about 16 years old and have been through a lot, but they are still in perfect functioning condition. In my studio I now use my two Regalite 6 camera stands that I picked up last year and rebuilt for studio shoots. The camera stands require less floor space and are perfect for use in my smaller studio. I have 5 or 6 other tripods of varying ages, brands, and sizes still around, but these are what I'm presently using.

In the field, my Slik tripods are a little heavy, but rock solid and with many features allowing them to adapt to nearly any situation. I usually take at least one of them if the carry distance won't be very far, but at my age (82) I'm not going out that often any more and now concentrating more on work in my studio. So now, when the field work requires some walking distance, I tend to take a trusty old Velbon Monopod with me, but I have a few lighter weight tripods with less features than the Slik that I might take over the Slik because of their lighter weight.

Currently, itís a Gitzo Mountaineer GT3542 with a Markins tripod hub. I tuned this tripod to be such a joy to use.

For an ultralight application, it is the Marsace XT-26S, less than half the weight of the Gitzo while still having a big set of legs.

RRS TFC34L w/ Acratech leveling base and either Acratech Pano Head or Fotopro E-6H gimbal head.
RRS TFC14 mk2 w/ Leofoto LB-60 leveling base and Acratech Pano Head.
Platypod Max w/ Acratech GP-S ballhead.

I do like Acratech gear. And RRS build quality and finish makes using their gear (tripods and L-bracketsÖ I donít rate their ballheads) a pleasant experience, even if itís only marginally ďbetterĒ than other quality brands.

Iím kind of in the cheap seats when it comes to legs.

Bought an Artcise as80c on the bay for about $85 shipped and pair it with either an acratech long lens head or infrequently a bento geared head. Itís pretty sturdy but I keep a close eye on the twist lock legs.

Travel tripod is an older flm cp26 (the one with the center column) with an arca swiss p0 head.

Retired a 3 legged thing punks billy (way too much flex with a larger dslr), and a workhorse manfrotto 055 pro b with a sirui k20 has been relegated to car trunk duty in case of emergencies.

Of all, the p0 is a work of art and one of the nicest pieces of gear I have purchased, but that artcise is one heck of a deal.
